What new in new in personal rescue devices

I have an older 7 -8 years old Garmin in reach, the orange one. Then with the little antenna. I can't find it anywhere > so I was thinking about. maybe upping my game a bit and wondering what is new. reliable more user friendly than The Garmin. And since this one is so old I don't know if the tech has changed so much that it is no longer functional. Planning a 2-4 day solo trip through the Inyos in the first week of June. So I am open to suggestions.

I’m still using an eight year old Garmin Inreach. Other than some improvements in size (smaller/lighter), faster connection and better battery life it is just as capable of sending/receiving messages as the new devices.

I have an inreach mini, but I haven't used it on my last few trips. Instead I rely on my iphone's sattelite mode for texting and reporting position. And SOS should I need it.

Using the iphone is not as convenient. I have to stop and look for a satellite, but it's good enough as long as i don't need to report my position or check for messages every few minutes. It has worked every time I've tried it.

I have an inreach that has served well, but the iPhone satellite text service has been working well enough that I suspended my garmin account.

When away from recharge capability, the inreach or similar still rules.

I tried a simple test at home to see if my iPhone a 15 pro would pick up satellites and got a message that said unavailable. I am sure a trip to Verizon ( is it available with Verizon) can fix that. But it brings me to another question if you were to get a cell booster ( like we boost). would that in any way help the satellite aspect? My gut says no not related but I just don't know enough.

A cell booster would not help, completely different system. Did you have your cell service and WiFi disabled? Pretty sure last time I played with the emergency satellite thing in the phone it made me do that first.

Disabling cell service and wifi is not sufficient. You need to leave leave cell service enabled and go to a place where there is no cell reception.

The testing I did with it was in my backyard with both WiFi and cell coverage. Figured turning it off was part of the steps since it asks about it.

Fair enough, I was referring to actually using the service.

I've sent messages via satellite when in a cellular dead zone about a mile's hike from my house and I was able to both send and receive messages.
