What to choose..........

Got a nice little Christmas bonus at my works Christmas party last night. So I'm debating what to pick up.

Either:

Bud Built belly skid or the gas tank skid from Lil' Skip's Offroad.

Which would you choose? Any other suggestions.

Could do both but I'm not sure on that.

That's a tough one. I would say gas tank skid for obvious reasons. But also a belly skid for the same obvious reasons. Good luck with that one, Taron.

Formerly having a 98 with the front and belly sids from BB, I would suggest the gas tank skid. I found that I was more aware of the belly skid and would drag it and rocks right into the gas tank skid, so I would have done that one first. My belly skid was heavily used, so either would be good, but both would be better.

Hmmm, interesting, I have the exact different experience. I had a Bud Built skid and belly pan. My skid and belly pan have bash marks since I put armor there for a reason. My OEM gas tank skid has a couple scratches but no real dents since I make an effort to avoid hits there.

I'd say purchase the belly pan and skid as these are the most likely places to incur injury on the undercarriage.

I have the belly skid plate now and I can say that I've hit the gas tank skid way more often than that belly skid. The one nice thing about the belly skid is that is does protect the tranny and tcase really well. It does make servicing things a bit of a pain. If you get the gas tank skid, post up pictures. I need to get one at some point and would like to see it on a 4Runner.

i would go belly, but that's for my tacoma with a longer wheel base, haven't hit the gas tank much. from the looks of things, i could certainly see how the 4runners are more vulnerable. a while back there was someone on ttora who had simply modified his stock gas tank skid by welding reinforcement (what i think this person did was weld angle with the v down in a few strips running the length to act as runners?) like some plate to it, which is a route i might go with. i just don't think i wheel hard enough to justify the gas tank skid and all that added weight, especially when hitting the transmission or tcase would seem to be potentially disastrous and they have no protection to begin with.

Budbuilt first. Your drivetrain is more important then your gas tank, which already has a half way decent skid.

If you know anyone with a welder all you have to do to get a kickass gas tank skid is to take off the stock one and weld a plate to it. Me and a friend did this to my truck and I was bumping it on a pointy rock trying to make it up a ledge and it held up just fine.

BB works great!

I pulled 3 full shovels worth of snow packed into them with this blizzard in Wisconsin...and yes maint. will suck taking them off, re-painting them and changing trans and t/case fluids.

This is true... I've seen a couple trucks with enhanced gas tank skids that have done what you said and it struck me as a pretty cost effective, pragmatic solution.

Small Frye, Lil' Skips Off Road Gas Tank Skid Plate is not compatible with the Sonoran Steel 1.2 or 7.2 lift kits, they have too much articulation.
