What to have in an on-board toolkit

Heya,

As my first post here, I wanted to ask for some advice from those of you who are quite a bit more experienced at this.

Recently I purchased a Gen 3 Montero (which used to be Imnosaint's - there is a great build thread on that one) and am trying to get things in order for it so I can take it off road and such. One of the more important things is to have a decent tool kit on board and I would like to know if you guys have any advice on what tools are a must-have to have on board for a Gen 3. (In addition, if there are any Gen 2.5 specifics, I'd be interested in knowing this as well as a friend of mine has a '98 Monty)

Thanks!

I'll definitely have a good search around, being at work kinda prevented me from doing so however so apologies if this was considered "spammy" :)

Besides what Jhil15 listed I carry:

  • Pickle fork
  • Star socket set
  • Tarp\sheet of plastic to lay on
  • Spill kit
  • Spare fluids - Oil, tranny, power steering, etc......
  • Ratchet strap or two
  • Jumper cables
  • Electric\Gorilla tape prefer over Duct
  • Super glue
  • Tire puncture kit

I used to carry a lot more but over the years have trimmed the kit down. I rarely fly solo - usually go out in a group of 3+. If I don't have the tool someone else does.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
My tool kit is a canvas tool bag with a HD zipper. It holds
Wrenches; 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm x2 (one is bent to reach the UCA bolt behind the front shocks), 19mm, 21mm, 24mm and a crescent wrench.

Sockets; all of the above sizes plus 32mm spark plug socket, a short and long extension 3" and 6", universal joint and sizes 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm in deep sockets as well. 17mm and up are 1/2 dr and 10-14mm are 3/8 and i keep a 1/4" set 8-14mm with driver and ratchet for the small stuff as well

Screwdriver + - in a couple sizes including a stubby that has bits in all sizes, a 6# short handle hammer (for easy TRE replacement), slipjoint pliers, small vice grips, a special needle nose pliers (i have ground the last 1/4" to be very small, probably 3/16" dia closed) i use these for regular needle nose stuff and removing circlips and snap rings.

wire cutter/crimper, 5' of electrical wire, electrical tape, zip ties, a couple circuit breakers, wire crimpers, an assortment of connectors and a few wire nuts (wire nuts do not belong in the automotive world but in a pinch especially for testing or if somebody else needs your help they work for temporary repairs and don't use up your good connectors.

multitool knife, hose clamps, wire rope clamps and a few other trick things and that's what i pack. You can nearly disassemble the entire truck with the above tools and takes up little space.

Off the top of my head when I first posted I forgot many things

Like sneakyninja and jdavis I too carry
Zip ties (important)
Electrical tape
Hose clamps
Flash lights

I will definitely be adding a small tarp, thats a great idea that I never thought of.

Cheers!
