What to look for when buying a Rover?

This is a little good news, but I've read about the old alum block engine dropping liners and I really can't fix that in a couple days, I don't mind PM's as long as it's not EVERY weekend (I like to have at least 1, if not 2, weekends a month I can be out camping)... I'm gonna check out the Disco anyway, if it's in top notch shape, I might take it anyway, really depends on the shape it's in...

The truck has 125K & runs well? Then I would not sweat it keep the cooling system up to snuff. (as with any car truck ect) More than likely she a runner! Like Musky said there is huge amount of support out there if you look! :Wow1:

dont sweat a dropped liner its more a internet legend then a regular happening.

the issues start when you over heat the things. keep a fresh radiator in there cooling it with a working fan clutch and a somewhat fresh thermostat and they dont have issues.

ignore the thing till it overheats on you and yes you will have issues.

the trucks are great trucks and they wheel circles around the land cruisers everyone is so quick to worship around here.

Go ask your question on discoweb.org and you will get a much better idea about these trucks. I have a number of them and wrench on them all the time and dont really feel they are any unreliable at all, infact I think the are tough as all hell and stand up to a bunch more then most people will ever throw at them.

Very good to know, I tried getting to discoweb.org, but the sire didn't work :/

I have one last question, is it a requirement to run 93 octane in these trucks? I know the LT1 in my Camaro prefers 93, but the computer will knock back the timing to keep it from detonating... Will the Disco do the same or do you have to run premium?

i just sold my 2000 discovery II and i loved it but i sold it because the economy sucks and they are not great on gas mine got 9mpg. i will buy another one some day but i will get a disco 1 (pre-99) they dont get all the quirky fault codes, factor center dif lock no need to buy a aftermarket lever, and in my opinion the older it is the more relaxed i am when driving offroad.....body damage sucks

Gas mileage doesn't bother me all too well, I don't drive but maybe 100 miles a week on average, I guess I shouldn't be worried about the premium thing like I am, being that I don't drive it that much...

Agree, I own two vehicles that burn premium. One's a "toy car" and the other is my daily driver. I don't even think about the difference when I fuel. By the third fill up you don't care.

Yeah, it's down about 30-50% of the time it seems. Just keep trying.

Yes, the truck *can* run on 87 in a pinch, it will retard timing. But, I don't recommend it for long. There's plenty of internet rumors of bad things happening if you do that.

I agree with muskyman. I've had 2 Discoveries and never dropped a liner or anything.
I also in my own opinion think the Rovers to be pretty reliable. The main components of the these vehicles are very strong. Chassis,Tranny,T-case/Engine and will take alot of abuse when maintained correctly. it's the electrics that are a little "whack" but thats due to lucas he's evil and likes to play games haha!:sombrero:

Land rover recommends premium for best performance and for the engine to run it's best. However I use 89 and my truck runs just fine.

I've heard about the evils of Mr. Lucas, lol... Whatever truck I get I plan on keeping until at least grad school (a good 3 more years away), and I would rather have manual windows and all that jazz and I figure once something on it goes like that, I'll just swap it over to manual set up, manual door locks, and windows, and whatnot, there isn't some strange reason I couldn't do this is there? My eventual plan is a diesel swap (which is why the Disco is appealing), and manual tranny (years down the road), and probably keep it for most of the rest of my life, getting something a little more reasonable to DD, but keeping whatever I get for longer trips...

I'm tempted to use regular or mid grade on fill ups as well.

This was noted on another board: If an extra $2-4 a tank is going to break you, you got the wrong truck.

Yes, I think it's very true. Same deal with the oil I'm using. $20 for some regular oil, or $35 for Castrol Syntec 5W40.... $15 extra every 5000km? Pffft!

Thanks for your opinion.

Like all Rover forums, we get our share of questions from people who see a $4000 Disco or Range Rover on Craigslist, and think "Cool! Cheap truck!" I certainly did. I went and looked at over 15 Disco Is in my area, and each and every one had one or more little problems here or there that the previous owner didn't fix. Some of them had major problems the owners were ignoring until they died on the side of the road. Some would have been less than $100 (parts via eBay) and some man hours to fix, some would have been many thousands. Again, we're talking about a ~15 year old vehicle, so I don't expect them to be pristine in my environment. I do expect doors and windows to open/close, doors to lock, transmissions to shift, engines to idle... These were all street-driven, soccer mom vehicles, many maintained by the dealer for a good portion of their lives (until probably the 75-100K point). At some point, the owners just decided to let some stuff slide for financial or whatever reasons. Happens to just about every car at some point.

What I walked away from that experience with was a perspective that while a Disco I is one of my dream vehicles, finding one that met my needs and financial goals would have been problematic- if not impossible. I'm not willing to dump the same amount of money into a Disco as I am my Series, because the long-term attachment isn't as strong. The Disco would likely serve as a daily driver and family camping rig, which is a role currently served by a more economical (MPG, maintenance) vehicle that is historically more reliable.

Anyway, just providing my view on them. It is my strong belief that anyone who says Land Rover makes the most reliable vehicles out there for expedition travel has been drinking the green KoolAid for too long. Capable? Yes (big Yes). Reliable? I guess that would depend on your definition of reliable. The weight one puts on capability, economy, reliability, or image (a big selling point) determines if a Rover is right for them.

...but I don't own a Disco, so I wouldn't know.
