What Truck for family of 5, 3 kids that are getting BIG!

First time post!

We live in North Idaho Coeur d'Alene and are a very active family my wife and I are in our mid thirties with three kids 8, 12, and 15. We have been the last owner of about 6 vehicles, meaning they were near the bitter end when we purchased them. We have owned a 91 Camry wagon, 87 Surburban, 2 Outbacks, and now a 2007 Explorer.

Fortunately we only need one vehicle at this time as I have a company work car.

What we do:

Hike, canoe, white water raft, and bike.

How we do it:

We have been pulling a homemade mostly bullet proof 4x6 utility trailer with heavy axle and 15" wheels to haul car camping equipment. It works awesome I can take it anywhere with our Explorer. It creates virtually no hassle but what I don't like is fighting dust and the fact that everything ends up too wrapped up hard to access in totes and tarps and straps.

The Explorer is actually a great rig but has two major drawbacks, very limited storage space and terrible mpg with the 4.6 v8. I bought the v8 as the estimated fuel rating was very similar to the v6 but we average 13-14.

I've decided the approach to take is a 4dr 4x4 truck, I really like Toyotas and have been looking at the double cab Tundra with the regular box not the crew max as the bed is not long enough to sleep in.

I would like to set it up with a shell or a lightweight pop-up camper. I would still use my trailer from time to time for canoes, bikes etc.

I've always loved the tacoma's but am making an assumption that they are too small correct me if I'm wrong and would severely limit my ability to carry a pop-up camper. Also with the Tundra I would have the ability to haul 6 with the front bench on some trim levels.

We do a lot of exploring in the area often traveling 200 miles away from home on a weekend heading to trailheads and other destinations, I'd love to have something with 20 mpg but I don't seem to see anything out there that will haul my family and stuff and still achieve great mpg's. I will also be towing a raft trailer from time to time not real heavy under 1500 pounds.

I'm also getting a little frustrated with tent camping as often we just need a place to pull over and sleep for a night and then head on the next morning, It's getting laborious lately we've done it for hundreds of nights over the years but it just takes so much effort looking for a suitable spot for a tent and setting up and taking down. We do this with out much gear usually not even chairs etc. as all of our gear fits in the 4x6 trailer.

Anyway I'm kinda leaning towards the Tundra but am open to opinions from the forum. I've ruled all SUV's out as only the biggest are large enough to contain my family a dog and our gear and at that point I'd rather have the truck that the large suv is built on.

My kids are getting huge, its pretty much like 5 adults now!!!!!

While I love compact (I guess they're mid-sized now) trucks, it sounds like it'd be more comfortable for your crew to go with a full-size.

I don't know if you'll have enough seating space in the current Double Cab for everyone to be comfortable. It's kind of more of an Access-cab, with fairly limited leg-room for the backseat passengers. The CrewMax would best accommodate your family and you could still fit a 6-7 foot truck camper in the short bed.

The Toyota 4.6 would probably get you better fuel economy than the Ford 4.6. The Toyota 5.7 might even do a touch better than yours on fuel, but that's a lot of engine.

We are also a family of five. 12, 10, and eight. We are active, but would like to be more active. We love our '05 DC Tundra. The interior is big. I find the back seat very comfortable. My kids fit without any real issue. The bed is long enough to sleep in as well. We pull our camp trailer with it, our M416 loaded for car camping, and I've even pulled a car hauler with a mini van on it and the truck did surprisingly well. Ours has a shell, a 2" lift and 285 Cooper STMaxx tires on it. We just did 1000 miles around Southeastern Idaho pulling the camp trailer it was great. Click on the link to check out the truck.

Also have three kids nd have been in the same situation.

Best decision we ever made was a 4x4 E350 van. Comfortable seating for all and loads of room. Tried other options and nothing even comes close.

I have an 08 tundra double cab and absolutely love it. It fits my needs but it seems like you would need the crewmax. I don't hesitate to throw 3 people in the back of my truck for a day trip but anything more would not be very uncomfortable. It Has a good amount of space but the crewmax feels 10x better. I understand not wanting to give up the bed space but I don't think it would be to much of an issue if you have a trailer.

As for fuel mileage I average about 15 all around with the 5.7. Though you may not need the 5.7 like I do its great to have the extra power and the aftermarket support.

4runner Limited with 3rd row seating.
Better HP to weight ratio than the Tundra, and better gas mileage too.

Agreed with above. The double cab Tundras will not be comfy for long with the kids continuing to grow. I assume you want the vehicle for a few years, and with kids at those ages, I don't think they'd be comfy for long in the back. Just my opinion though. I felt very cramped after 45 minutes of riding in the back of one, and I was the only one in the back.

I think a full size may be a better fit for your requirements (longer bed and crew cab).

How is the third row in those? I've never had a chance to ride in one, and I'm curious. The pictures make it look really cramped with no cargo space, but I'm curious how they are in practice. Definitely on my personal list of considerations for the wife's car when the little ones arrive.

Ok for the 8 year old. But 1 kid of any size could stretch out and leave second row for the other two.
Also, the HP to weight ratio for the 4runner is actually better than the v8 tundra.
I love the power and the SUV-like storage.
Add a gobi rack, a 3 inch lift, and some 285s and it is incredible on or off road.

You really have to test drive one for yourself. Trust me, it makes a beautiful family expo vehicle.

I personally own a black 2014 trail premium w/ KDSS. If I was building for family, the Limited version with third row is the way I would go.

Uh. No. No. No. And. No.

We own one and mileage is great, but no way hell I'd endorse it for 5 "adults." We've had 7 in the 4runner, and there us about enough room for a small kleenex box in the back.

For the size of family, I'd go tundra crewmax or sequoia...

EDIT: Honestly, if buying nearly new, I'd buy a F150 ecoboost crew cab and call it good. Nicer, IMHO better built than the Tundra, and will get 50% better mileage. If I was so emotionally attached to Toyotas, I'd have one in the driveway.

Currently I drive a 2007 4runner, and my wife has a 2011 4runner. We recently returned from a week long trip to the beach in the wife's car. With myself my wife and twin 3 year olds there was no noticeable difference in power or handling. We had enough things packed into the car that if there would have been an accident it would have looked like a turkish bazaar. My 4runner handles differently when loaded from a trip to the grocery store. The third row in my wife's car is totally unusable due to my twins car seats. They completely block access to the third row. I am trying to figure out what vehicle to purchase next. An enclosed trailer will solve the problems we had with storage during a long trip, but a trailer would not solve the problem of were to place another person if they were to travel with us.

My family of 4 has 2 boys (10 & 12). I have a 2008 Tundra DC with a truck camper and we have been in every Rocky mountain state and driven thousands and thousands of miles doing so. I even pull a small trailer from time to time with dirt bikes/mountain bikes. It works great for us. In fact we are heading to the Arizona/New Mexico border near Gallup for some mountain biking in a few weeks... .

That being said, when you hit 3 kids, I wonder if a 3-row SUV may be more practical. My Tundra has a bench in front and have hauled 6 people/kids many times--but not for extended trips.

I have to disagree with a 4runner with 3 rows for extended trips--in my opinion, they are just too small. The only 3 row vehicles that I think are truly comfortable are full-size vans or SUVs.

Kinda thinking its manivan time E350 style. Ask me again tomorrow and I may change my mind. Ask me the day after that and I may have changed it again.

LOL. Yeah, I've got my truck for wheeling/expo. It would be for the wife, and she's short/hates wheeling = no lift, no tires, no racks. I probably won't be able to convince her to do the expo thing with kids either.

I've seen the 5th gens in action, and they are really impressive.

I'm actually really curious to hear about how the 5th gen racks (steering) hold up to 285's though. The third gen stuff really doesn't. It sounds like the 5th gens lift a lot better (no alignment issues), so maybe in 10 years or so, I can get one to replace the third gen. It'd be nice to not have to try to find aftermarket solutions if the OEM stuff is fine.
