What Would You Buy?

I’m thinking about replacing a hard side camper on my full size 8’ bed truck with something lighter and more aerodynamic. Must haves are heat, stove, refrigerator, water system, cassette toilet (or composting?), easy to lift top, reasonable storage, and good insulation. I’m leaning towards an Alaskan, but curious about other campers. There seem to be quite a few new builders now, any recommendation?

Outfitter or Northstar would be my first options for a fabric sided pop up. I’ve seen both and was very impressed with both.

Years ago, at different times I had a jayco, a hallmark, and a StarCraft. None of them seemed as well built or designed as these two ⬆️

Have you thought of a build project? You could do a ultra lite style pop up with a Project M or Go Fast Camper shell and build from there. I just pitched my Palamino pop up for this exact thing. Although, what I just got rid of sounds exactly like what you are looking for. 😄

I went with a FWC, since tried and true. And nearby, and helpful and fast with repairs and warranty. As is usually the case, I expect some companies here now might not be here in a few years. Hope so, but the history of the RV industry is littered with fails.

Alaskans are not light weight thats for sure. However!!! They are pretty good for cold temp travel. Negative they are wood frame and most are rotten mess by 15-20yrs of age

I know this is a dead horse but if you don't need the reduced clearance that a pop up offers, I'd go with a super light buildout on a total composites slide in or a Scout camper. The 1 foot of extra height doesn't make that much difference gas mileage wise.

I’m fortunate enough to have a garage that accommodates truck and camper. Most of the issues with wood framed campers is because of them being stored outside.

Of all the campers I’ve been in, an Alaskan has by far the most comfortable seating. My back doesn’t like the typical 90° seat profiles of typical campers.
