What's the perfect bed platform height?

42" offers plethora of fornicating options not available in a coffin.
A luxury, but it is a bed..

I once had a cabin cruiser with a v-berth (aka stabbin' cabin) in the bow. There was plenty of space fore-aft and athwartships...but not much head space. But there WAS a hatch that opened up for access to the front deck. Once I figured out that I could stick my head out thru that hatch whilst doing the deed...things got a bit more fun. Not to mention the laughter from the other boaters anchored around us...

No, but it is not really suited for some of the things I want to do - weekend trips and hauling a trailer to Moab. The Fuso is still the main rig for extended travel!

Size the bed height close to what you have at home. Its nice to sit on the edge of the bed to pull on your socks and tie up your shoe laces.

I ending up building a wooden slat platform at about 24" height. My thinking being it is a lot easier to make it shorter than taller if I need to adjust. The side rails are attached by two pieces of aluminum L channel, the slats all "float" and are removable. It has a 4" "Ultimate Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper" ($100 from Target) as the sleeping pad, which so far has proven exceedingly comfy. I used 14 slats of 1x4 southern yellow pine, spaced about 2" apart and tied together with 1" webbing (actually a couple of tie down strap extensions I had laying around). Total cost for the bed platform was about $200, could have been less but I splurged $70 or so for pre-made table legs instead of making my own and used SYP instead of cheapo furring strips. If I had just built from the cheapest materials it would have been less than half that.

Our bed height is just 12" at the base this enabled us to sit upright at a pull out table on cold mornings and rain days, The 12" height allowed us to have no waste when cutting the plywood base while giving a lot of storage under the bed as well as space for larger amount of porta water the full bed works well in the area of containing road noise as it has a 5" foam Ikea mattress on it laid out while in travel this beats the body insulation all while providing seating and sleeping in a lower cost approach. This also works well as I'm over 6 foot and we do not have nor want a high roof for our own reasons.

Good luck in finding your approach.

Yeah the 24" height certainly won't allow sitting upright but definitely liking the extra storage space underneath. With the wood slats I can "roll it up" to give a lot more space if we need to shelter inside, but at this point all plans are a work in progress as we try to figure it out. Thanks!
