You could make a Jurassic Park replica version that has bull bars and 29" super swampers

Hi, I don't know what the market is like in your part of the world so can't advise you on how much you should be spending to get a reasonable car.
I have owned an Ml270 Cdi (5 cylinder diesel) in the past. It was quiet and comfortable inside. The engine was good and no transmission faults although I sold the car before it got to 300,000 miles.
I used it on some reasonably tough terrain and it was fine. Even with wheels in the air! Its a case of not throwing a lot off money at a car modifying it but learning to drive what you have.
Off road competence is lower than a Defender but better than many Japanese 4x4's including the Mitsubishi Montero/shogun
The complaint I had with it was body corrosion, the wheel arches and doors especially. Maybe due to the English climate! as plenty of 5 year old trucks get very rusty here.
I enjoyed mine.
Hope this helps.

Thanks! Sadly no CDI here in Canada... Only the gas guzzlers ;-( As you said, it's affordable and as far as I can tell without any major common problems.

The ML Class 163 still has a transfer case with Hi & Low gears.

It is truly an all-time 4-wheel drive vehicle - in Low and Hi. Not like most of the "newer" some-time 4x4 vehicles....

It is by far not a Gwagen, but with 16" wheels and some decent tires, we drove on tough Baja 1000 tracks last year.

I know this is an old thread but I'm researching a bit more about the M (163) myself as it seems kind of like a Subaru Forester with low range, a medium duty frame, the ability to fit 265-75s and higher quality build materials. For the vast majority of things I do that might be a damn good place to be.

I picked up a 1998 ML320 from my mother in law about 4 years ago, the ac wasn't working and the dealer wasn't offering much for a trade in so I ended up taking it. Put 245-75-16 general grabbers and turned up the torsion bars and drove it like it was a disposable car!!! Went all over the north east camping, hunting and fishing. Never had a problem! Excellent in snow. As long as you are used to traction control and don't mind having tires off the ground it worked great. Def not a rock crawler but great overland set up. The rear seat setup is fantastic and very comfy to sleep back there. Sold it to a friend and is still going strong with about 180k on it now and still looks good.
