When to replace shocks?

I have OME HD shocks and I'm wondering when I need to replace them.

I have about 3.5 years and 40K miles on them.

It's not like the vehicle bounces a lot and suffers from a lack of dampening, but this kind of thing seems like it slowly degrades over time and it's hard to tell when it's time until they get really bad.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks,

TD

I normally start hunting for shocks when my Jeep starts driving like a telletubby.

Though, more often then not, when I think its driving bad because of shocks I normally have lost 10psi in the rear tires and that's the cause :).

40k sounds like about enough for a well used shock though (I killed bilstien 5100s in that time frame). It might be worth pulling the end of one off to see how the gas charge is doing (pretty sure the OME HD are a charged shock). If it still pushes at you with some good force, I'd think it would be ok.

Many people such as race car drivers can tell by the seat of their pants exactly what each shock is doing. Its kind of like being in tune with each muscle of your body.

Motorcycle riders get very good at this also because they are constantly adjusting their shocks and feeling the different results so they have a better reference point.

The industry standard states most shocks are ready to be replaced by 50,000 miles. You may be ready now considering the extra use and heat yours get.

Thanks, gents.

Looks like a good reason to upgrade to the new OME Nitrocharger Sport shocks then.

I hate it when I'm forced to upgrade. :coffeedrink:
