Since nobody else seemed to actually try this on a Cayenne I figured I would dive in now that my winter tires needed replaced!

They are tight when turning, but clear at the normal height setting. Just graze the fender liner on the turbo at the low setting(turning, clear fine straight)

The contact on the low setting is literally just a super light dusting type contact. It would also be very early to just trim out the fender liner for an even bigger tire.

This picture is at the normal driving height, not the offroad height.

I just found out the 1st gen could be had with a manual trans and the VR6 motor. Strong contender for my next vehicle once we pay off my wife's car

Not sure the VR6 is a good choice. The V8/Turbo have proven to be a more reliable powerplant and won't have an ultra rare manual transmission in them. Of course, you can always chaing the VR6 timing chains while you have the transmission out:bike_rider:. Not saying its an unreliable motor but with the minor price difference the V8s tend to have lots more options and are around in greater numbers.

Remember the Cayenne is 5200lbs. It magically sheds that weight off with the V8 or TTV8 but not so much with a VR6. I have a Eurovan with the 24v 2.8l VR6 (Cayenne has the same engine in 3.2l version) and the motor is pretty pathetic trying to move my 4900lb front drive only van with tiny tires.

Just here...
The 3.2 VR6 is a great motor. First gen Cayennes and Touaregs, whoever, were brake and tire eating rolling electrical nightmares.

First gen Cayenne did not have the electronic problems of the Touareg, totally different electrical systems.

The VR6 is just hugely under powered in a Cayenne. Totally defeats most of the advantages of a Cayenne. Without the V8, the big brakes that only come on the V8 and Turbo and the air suspension the Cayenne would seem more like "just an SUV".

I go through tires about every 40k and have yet to change my brakes on my Cayenne Turbo at 107k and I have auto crossed and towed with it. It's time to change them and the parts aren't even that expensive.

I follow the Cayenne forums in detail and the issues your spouting are more speculation and internet rumors than fact.

What forums are you following?

I am sure my base model Cayenne will perform just fine. I see big repair bills in air suspensions and other fancy options.

Where are you seeing "big air suspension repair bills" it is a very rare failure on a Cayenne.

Air suspension has been around for something like 40 years in cars and big trucks. Some of the systems, especially old ones, had issues. The air suspension on the Cayenne is not perfect but problems are rare.

Lots of good forums out there 6speedonline.com, renntech. Com, planet9.com, rennlist.com, pelicanparts.com

Cayenne

Picked it up in Phoenix and drove it home to El Paso. I really like it.

My first post here but I wanted to add.

I had a 2006 wrangler rubicon but wanted to get something and build it for overlanding that would accommodate everything I need along with the wife and dog. So I picked up an 06 Cayenne S. turns out its completely set up for everything I'm going to throw at it really. New rims and a set of all terrains are going to come soon and thenaybe a roof rack. Recovery gear I already have. I think it's a great platform and I don't plan on turning back.
