Where did you get your Photoshop CS4?

that Windows 7 loads and runs faster on a Mac than on most (all?) PC's. (WashPost Tests) And yes, Windoze 7 may finally be a real operating system.

Thats funny because I always think of Apple making great laptops and rubbish desktops, the only reason I don't have a desktop mac is because they are nowhere near fast enough.

Hardware aside, I use CS4 all the time for work but I always Lightroom for photographs. With Lightroom 1.x I would use Photoshop to do masking but since they added pretty usable masking to to Lightroom 2 thats all I use.

Not that slow.

Rob,

My dual processor, quad core Intel box with 5 GB of RAM isn't THAT slow. Ironically, the only thing that will slow it down is a 100 MB TIFF in Aperture. And as I scan slides, I get lots of them.

I have a reference box from AMD with 32cores and 128gb of ram. Rendering CG brings it to its knees (final rendering will use a whole bank of these). We render HD @ 1920x1080, 64x super sampling and full HDR (each frame is 1.5gb, 128 mega pixels, before its anti-aliased).

With a 32bit operating system Photoshop can't even load them on PC or MAC.

EDIT: Vista doesn't run any faster on this box! The apps do run faster because they are not fighting the OS, vista can have a couple of cpus and a few gigs of memory all to itself.. I posted elsewhere that I installed OSX on a 16core Intel box (quad processor quad core) and it ran fine using all the processors. I haven't tried to install OSX on this box yet.

Already stated, but I'll reiterate/reinforce the recommendation for Lightroom as an end-to-end digital darkroom tool over Photoshop ... and I'm a long-time user of PS. I recommend Lightroom to all my friends looking for a photo editing tool who aren't already using something like PS; it's a much better place to start and more than enough for those focused on photography. I stick with PS simply because I've a workflow I'm comfortable with and I like pushing images with layers and selective/spot editing that's easier (for me) to do in PS. I constantly assess moving to LR for bulk work while retaining PS for deeper processing.

Over my head!

Rob,

You are just a little bit beyond cataloging pictures of a visit to the seaside!

That said, one of the alleged advantages to OSX has been the OS's ability to use multiple processors/cores, even if the application could not. That is, OSX will spread your running aps across the resources. Won't make any single ap go faster (unless it is multiprocessor aware), but keeps the whole box from slowing down because of one heavy ap.

I appreciate the advice about Lightroom. I downloaded the trial version a few days ago and tried it out on some photos from last years Colorado trip. Many had two spots that I did not notice at the time. Lightroom fixed most of them very easily. I picked up a book and will try out as many features as possible. It may be what I need.

Student Discount

Adobe supports significant student discounts on their products so pay close attention to your eligibility. I didn't think that we were eligible and almost missed a great buy. My wife is in her masters program at Pepperdine. That qualifies her to purchase at Adobe's student discount. She will graduate this summer so we almost missed the opportunity.

We were able to get Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended for $199 and Lightroom for $99. Both for $298 plus tax and shipping. What a screaming deal. :wings:

I read that some folks were concerned that the student version would only allow you to install it on one computer. I called and talked with Adobe customer service and they said the Student version is a normal single user license and that allows for installation on two computers. In our case, we can load it on our desktop work horse as well as our laptop for mobile use. :sombrero:

The only limitation is you can't use if for comercial use. Not a problem for us.
