I'd appreciate some input on this decision:
My Pedders shocks ( a quality Aussie brand, big bore foam-type, list price AU$ 360 a pair....about same price as ARB ) need (?!?)replacement because the lower rubber on one shock has failed and gone missing - apart from that shocks are fine.....still under 2 year/40,000 kilometre warranty, but I can't find invoice/proof of purchase...... so Pedders in Darwin here will do them for $240.
I think it's bad design that the rubbers are not serviceable and that because of the way the bar pin goes in the rubber can't be replaced........also there is no option of polyurethane inserts/isolators which I believe would last longer, however Pedders and other makers claim that rubber is a better choice.
I've also looked at Ironman gas (discounted to $180) and foam cell shocks, but my trusted mechanic says even the gas ones ride really hard and most people don't like the ride but they're a well made shock (rubber isolators only, no polyurehane available.
When the the rear Pedders shocks were replaced due to massive physical damage caused by falling off a rock shelf and landing on the shock and tailpipe (both horribly twisted and bent in half) necessitating replacement of both. Prior to their replacement I had the lower rubbers replaced quite a few times - these were eye rings at both ends and were easily pressed in and out - which was just as well 'cos they used to chop out frequently.
I ended up getting Skyjacker Nitro 8000's ( a high pressure gas type shock) which I've been happy with. Their isolators are polyurethane and they are easily serviceable/replaceable. The price from Morris 4x4 in Pompano Beach FL was, including air shipping, a bit under AU$200 for the pair, which I thought was really good and they only took about 4-5 work days to get to Oz
So guys, and any gals too.....what recommendations have you got for a shock which gives a comfortable ride on the road/highway as well as good control offroad and comes with polyurethane isolators as standard or an option and which is serviceable?????
