Which model/motor do you recommend for an E350 build?

I found a 2000 cargo van, 7.3L 150k for $4600. Is a sliding door going to be a deal-breaker with a 6" lift and 35s?

Does anyone think towing with an extended body is going to be any worse than with the shorter body?

Hey Hitek, I've driven Monarch Pass several times in my v-10, but didnt get pulled down that slow. If I remember, it was down to abt 45-50 in the steeper sections. Cant remember though whether I was just being careful, or had it "floored". BTW, I never really floor mine on a grade; try to keep it about 75% throttle. My rig is a lot lighter. What gears and wheel size do you have on Das Bus?

Anyone do a ZF-5 or ZF-6 behind a Ford diesel in a van? Sure would be nice for off roading, towing and long grades (climbing and descending)

They are both pretty beefy trans and with a nice dual disc organic clutch, will take relatively high amounts of power (Luk, Southbend, Valair, etc) A 273 transfer case should bolt right up if you are doing a 4WD conversion.

Over all others, I'm still partial to a 460. clean the hump out of the exhaust ports, headers, performer 750 carb, intake and cam along with hotter spark and you can build some serious hp and torque numbers with 10 to 12(empty) mpg. We built probably an easy 20 of these motors for our car hauler f 350s. The 7.3 intercooled is a great motor if your putting miles on it, but the trade off is maintenance costs. Dad always says if your putting on under 50k a year, the gas motor is cheaper to maintain. I'm not sure what you can do with the injected 460s though.

4.63 gearing in the rear. I can do that pass all day long in my regular van at 55mph, so I would assume a normal van with the V-10 should be able to do the same.

I've wanted an E350 van for quite some time, but I was lucky enough to check out a local ExPo member's rig last week. We're hooked now. Even the wife is completely on board. Now we're just patiently waiting for the right 7.3 EB to pop up.

What do you guys think about passenger vans with full windows vs cargo vans? Pros/cons? I seem to go back and forth every day.

Passenger vans obviously have more visibility, which is good when driving, bad when trying to have privacy. Passenger vans have factory passenger seatbelt and seat mounts, whereas cargo vans unusually do not. They also tend to have rear AC, a headliner, and OEM trim. This can save a lot of work in the build out, or can be a bunch of junk you need to tear out for a custom interior. Passenger vans are more likely to have power windows and door locks. They also tend to have been treated nicer. Most cargo vans I have seen, especially with a 7.3, have a beat up cargo space and dented wheel wells from being used as intended.

When building out the back of VANdiana, I often wished that I had gone for a cargo van, so that I wasn't constrained by the layout of the windows in the back. BUT, having the idea of hauling a family around, I defaulted to their benefit of a view in the passenger van. BTW, in regards to the Fantastic Fan or MaxxAir... A fan was on my short list had I kept VANdiana. These vans benefit from a little ventilation.

Here is a link to my old build thread with my thoughts on the van right after a big road trip.

Analogous to preferring a penthouse or a basement apartment. There are privacy and insulation arguments but I have always preferred the ability to look out a window.

In other words, personal preference.

There will be a difference but with proper towing/hitch equipment it can be done very easily.

I've had both...
I prefer cargo because I can alway add a window later, and let's not forget the security of less windows too.

I have an EB E350 passenger van. I had all the windows tinted as dark as you can and added black out curtain it works great. I have lived in the van 4 days a week for the last 9 months in the bay area.
The big plus is rear air, seat belts and general visibility.

great info everyone, thanks. I drove a neighbor's '04 6.0L quigly today and I thought the quigly ride was just fine. The power on the 6.0 was insane, but I still think I want to hold out for a 7.3L.
