See, that post is clearly a perfect example of what the problem is here! You have some kind of huge chip on your shoulder and live in a sad world where you are the victim against the world, it's truly sad to watch someone as hate filled as yourself to spiral out of control and quickly lose their grasp on sanity simply because you feel that anyone who doesn't think exactly the same as you do is evil and bent on ruining the world.

That’s a planning issue that could easily happen with any vehicle. I’ve been there many times in the southwest with combustion, difference is I didn’t have a computer with gps and mapping to guide me. My Rivian has a longer range than my Ranger did.

Yes more chargers would be great, but the round trip could have been added to the nav system in the Tesla and the car would have told her.
That doesn't change the fact that they couldn't drive directly home without a 3 hour stop, whereas stopping for gas on the same (desired) rout would have taken 5 minutes.

To me it seems like EVS are stuck in the early adopter phase. If you want you can make them work outside of an urban area you can. But you have to want to. I'm glad people want to but I'm not that guy.

I'm sure I would love a R1T but it's hard to justify when a Maverick is less than half the cost. $40k will but a lot of gas.

Cortez only has level 2 chargers so three hours isn’t too far off in order to get a decent charge.

I don’t think anyone cross shops a R1T and a Maverick. While they both have wheels and a bed that’s about where the similarities stop. The R1T is significantly more expensive but also comes with a significant bump in every performance and comfort metric across the board.

Planning issue? Yes, I can agree to that. But leaving it at that is a lot like being in the desert, looking to the guy on the next camel, and saying "you didnt plan and bring enough water? Too bad for you" when the second biggest issue is that a lack of a nearby oasis is really setting the tone for what happens going forward.

So, taking the situation for what it is, a 2 or 3 hour trip just to find an appropriate charger? Yeah. I'm clear across Massachusetts, or well up in the White Mountains by that time.

What could "easily happen in any" ICE vehicle is to say, "hey, when we head out, I gotta stop for gas." Then someone or everyone follows that guy down the road a piece, get gas in 10 minutes and everyone carry on down the road.

Maybe you might think about lobbying the Gateway General Store about putting in a charger or two. That might have eliminated the need for a 2 hour one-way drive.

I'm actually thinking that there should be a Jerry-can sized lithium jump pack that can quickly add 50 to 100 miles of charge for an EV. Sort of like throwing 5 gallons from the jerry can into the truck when I'm low and out in the middle of nowhere.

I did, until this year you couldn’t get hybrid and AWD. If I could have found a used AWD hybrid I might have gone that direction for a couple years. I didn’t want a new r1t but there were almost zero dual motor large pack used ones.

The Bosch quad motors are not going to be used going forward. Wanted the Rivian built dual motors, the same motors they use in the vans.

I have had several Fords but got tired of waiting for them. They sell a PHEV Ranger in Australia but they have no plans of doing so here.

Mojave trail is only 150 miles, well within the range and ability of most stock EV pickups. Charging is easy to find at both ends. Barstow ffs

You know, this sight used to instill a sense of adventure. I remember some of my favorite trip reports were of people doing things that weren’t easy. A Mercedes wagon across Africa or a Trail 90 through Vietnam. Why does the fuel source trigger some people?
Saying there is no charging stations on the Mojave Road stuck out to me too... There's no gas stations either! I've done the trail and spent another week exploring the area, it's remote but not nearly that remote. Honestly I would have more anxiety around a place like the Black Rock Desert, I've spent a few weeks in that area and didn't see anyone for days plus Gerlach is a true "One horse town." Still seems doable but with careful planning.

When folks started to try and drive automobiles across the US before there were gas stations, road maps, a highway system, snow plows they ventured into unknown territory but still did it! They had no clue if the next hardware store would have any gasoline to sell them but they went anyway. EV's are not even close to that level of unknown adventuring and yet people still have reservations about it. Anyone can now go buy a fully decked out "overland" rig off the lot and that vehicle would be capable of going on almost any trail/expedition (unfortunately the driver isn't always capable.) It's honestly kind of all boring now and this is coming from a Tacoma owner!

I'm not anti-EV. But it's not where it needs to be for me as an overlanding vehicle (this is an overlanding forum, right?)

We were simply car camping with friends on the Dolores river in SW CO. They had their camping rig (a fossil fuel burning Tundra). But the mom came out later in her Tesla - not towing or carrying anything, just drove out in the sedan. At some point around day 2 they realized they probably couldn't get home without either driving to Cortez, CO on the way back and spending ~3 hours hanging around doing nothing while the car charged, or making an unplanned 2 hr round trip to Telluride for a fast charger.

They blew off a hike and did the T'ride drive. And yes, I understand driving the Tesla to Telluride is a first world harship. But an unplanned out of the way drive to go there on 4th of July weekend and dealing with throngs of tourists isn't something I want to be forced into...that's why I'm camping. (My wife and daughter tagged along and they had a fabulous dinner at a French restaraunt while my buddy and I ate brats at the campsite, so they survived...but that's not the point)

Until EV ranges are a lot longer I still like being able to go to any old gas station.

That's frustrating for sure, EV's have their downside and one of them is a lack of infrastructure but that's quickly changing. One my favorite things about trips is planning them, a EV would add an extra level to that. Sure there might be times that your plans change due to the lack of charging stations but to me that's part of the adventure. I was once stranded in the Katmandu airport for a couple of days due to canceled flights and met some amazing people, drank beer and got a story out of it. Not for everyone I know but it also doesn't always have to be a negative.

Just as a reference I planned a drive I've taken numerous times to see what time penalty I would take for driving a R1T, dual motor with all terrain tires. I realize other factors play in and might add some time but less than 4 hours of charge time (59 minutes being the longest stop, most are under 30 minutes) over 17 hours of driving is pretty acceptable to me, especially as I get older and can't drive non-stop for hours on end.

There’s always a coke machine somewhere you could unplug.
