Who actually has an M416 title? Is your vin correct?

My father just went to the NJ DMV to register my trailer (Since PA is retarded) and the lady looked at the original us military title made to the previous owner and said she doesn't think the VIN 666 is valid. While it seems like they just put arbitrary numbers in there to me too, since its on the actual title how can they contest that?

I need to write up a Bill of Sale since the previous owner never re titled it because he liked the military title, but i had already saw that coming

Mine is 1. I had to stamp it onto the frame... It satisfied the California DMV and has never been an issue since.

If the public servant thinks it's not valid, then have her prove it. Or if she wants, tell her the number is 10 1001 1010 (666 in binary)

I like the binary option:) The issue is that the data plate has 4 layers of paint on it so i want to make sure everything is cool before i stamp a new data plate so i dont need to do it twice.

Both my M101 and My M725 have VINs that are basically serial numbers.

The M101 threw the DMV (MD) people for a loop for a little while. AFter a few reassurances they just took it.

The 'tag and title' guy I used for the M725 didn't blink. I think a lot of the DMV employees are used to 70s+ vehicles that all have some sort of encoded VIN. Some of the older stuff really isn't that complicated.

The last time I registered an M416 in NJ I went with a "Homebuilt" registration. Under "materials used" I entered "surplus military components". In and out of MVC in 15 minutes, plus stamping the NJ issued VIN in the tongue.

On another trailer I had a NY title and registration with a 5 digit vin. They had no problem using it, and the vin matched the data plate. It also had the make as "Stevens" (correctly) and the model as "M416".

I hope you make out as well as I did. Maybe try a different NJMVC office?

Note: Don't expect a title from NJ, just a registration. Titles are only needed for trailers that weigh over 2500lbs empty.

Note 2: NJ will likely give you a hard time about "flipping" the title if the previous owner's name is listed as buyer on the original from Uncle Sam. They will require you to have him title it in his home state, then sell it to you. Maybe "homebuilt" is the way to go for you.

Here in lies the problem, since PA is such a pain my father is registering in nj under his name and since he use to work for the state he is always paranoid about bending the truth.

So he will definitely not say its homemade

My situation is a little bit of the last two, NY bought never title in the new owners name. Since NJ doesnt require a previous title to register Im thinking that just the notarized BILL OF SALE with the vin that matches the gov vin and a matching data plate scraping should be enough? If they say they dont like the three digit vin then the original gov title can just be used as a proof of honesty? This way he is not lying about anything, the only thing to overcome would be the fact that i would be stamping my own data plate since the one on there is painted over and unsalvageable.

Are there any other Vins hidden on these besides the main data plate? Its got surface rust all over the frame so if there is one id like to try to find it.

Next option.

Find a Maine trailer tag service. Use them for a lifetime tag for it :)

the service manual shows three data plates and websites sell them in groups of two, where are the other two hidden?

Move to Oregon. No trailer plates or titles needed under 1800 lbs. :wings: Just lights and safety chains. :victory:

the situation just got worse. I had all the paperwork inline and gave it to my father (nj registration just needs BOS) and gave him the original military title AS A BACK UP ONLY incase the questions the odd 666 vin number. Well turns out he signs the bottom of the military title (made to the previous owner) and gives that to the desk FIRST?

now the dmv knows the title has never been changed, the military title is now worthless since it has two different names on it, and since the previous owner moved from ny to nj he couldn't even register it and basically that we are **** out of luck.

The only thing i can think of now is registering in pa as a homemade trailer giving a bunch of friends names and the people that i bought the parts to assemble it from since they need receipts and an inventory.

I am having the same issue in IL. There is no title for my trailer. I just got a bill of sale and didn't think it would be an issue, since I titled other trailers as homemade in the past, but in 2010 IL changed the law and now it will need to be inspected. I am not sure they will agree that it is a homemade trailer.
