who has swapped in an electric fan?

Just curious if you felt a seat of the pants difference in power and if your mpg increased? This thread is not to debate the pros and cons of said swap.

I wonder the same thing. Concerned somewhat about reliability though in comparison to an engine driven fan. Might be worth it though.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I'm swapped a Volvo fan in my '99, but i have too many variables to notice any difference. I swapped in a new 3.5 at the same time plus i have 35's, I'm gonna say though there's no noticable increase of power. I do however feel it when the fan kicks on, it draws a lot of amps starting but it's a 4500CFM fan and that's to be expected.

The fan does a killer job keeping the engine cool as well as moving air over the whole drivetrain, when it's running you can feel the airflow behind the truck. Having said that I'm switching back to OEM clutch fan and a high performance aluminum radiator just because it's more trail fixable than this fan (it can't be removed without pulling the radiator). I have had no issues with it though.

I'm about to swap into my Dakota... My understanding is that HP and MPG won't be too noticible, but will be there. My main reason for the swap is that I can add a 30-60sec afterrun and change the on-temp, in addition to a few more control-freak options.

I swapped a Ford Contour dual fan into my 94 SR... Had to trim the shroud a bit. I did it because I went through two fan clutches in a year and was tired of fixing them. The electric fan makes accessing the front of the engine much easier and I think it maintains a more stable engine temp. Has been on the truck for about 2 years and once I figured out the right size of fuse it's been rock solid reliable.

I'll be installing a Ford (Lincoln Mark VIII) fan soon, it's been on the shelf for a couple months now.

From the Volvo camp, I would opt for an 850 fan...it's the fan most 4 cyl turbo Volvo guys choose when swapping to an electric fan. Any 850 will work (1993-1997).

Good luck finding a relay and alternator setup that will keep up with that fan without spending a bit.

Current draw is about the same as my Volvo. IIRC, initial kick is ~40 amps and then it settles. Plenty of people running that exact fan with ~100 amp alternators and 30-40 amp relays...not sure how it would be any different here?

Matter of fact, the setup came all wired up with relays and everything - it was being used on a Ford Exploder that was in a wreck. I pulled out the whole she-bang from the parts car. It had a 95 amp alternator.

Do you have first hand experience or is your information hearsay?

The only problem he will have is the installation, it's a very tight fit. I've run both the Ford and Volvo fans with no problems using their stock relays and after markets controllers.

I measured things, and I saw your pictures I think...it's certainly cozy back there!!! I have an aftermarket radiator, and just that alone prompted some modification. The water neck on the bottom of the radiator was slightly longer than the OE one, so the neck and hose on the bottom driver side comes within 1/4" of rubbing on the pulley!

I actually have a Volvo 850 fan here too; I'll see which one is slimmer between the two.
