I just bought an SUV air mattress from Coleman.

i have a fiberglass camper shell for my truck and my truck has a plastic bed liner.
I bought some cheap carpet at Lowe's, the kind that guys often use to carpet bass boat. The carpet is a close match for the carpet that came with the camper shell. I cut a piece to fit in the bed between the hubs and bought a cheap walmart rug to place underneath for extra cushion.
I sleep on a self inflating roll up pad, it's low profile and self inflates to 3 inches and is long enough for me (i am 6'2).

I have toyed with the idea of building a bed platform just above the wheel wells and using my futon mattress, but I would loose head room preventing me from sitting up when I woke. That might not be a concern for some, but I have asthma and being able to immediatly sit up during an asthma attack is my concern.

In the hatch tent, or in the back of the Xterra
In my Airzone tent on top the TENTRAX or back of the JEEP

:arabia: Well Miss R2FJ, HATCH TENTS are made for all different vehicles, but mine was NISSAN "hatch tent" and it's about 10'x10' X 9 ft tall
I've had it for close to 3 yrs, so my wife and I can de-bag and setup, attached to vehicle, in about 15 minutes, but it takes teamwork and some practice
You can close it up and leave with the vehicle anytime and the tent is secure, as any tent can be
I like it, because, you can get from tent to vehicle in about 30 seconds, for danger/security-whatever
I haven't used it with my JEEP JK, yet, but I'll just modify it, to function
Mine was $265 bucks from Courtesyparts, A NISSAN PARTS HOUSE, I'M SURE THE OTHER HATCHTENTS ARE CHEAPER, BUT THEY ARE PRICELESS IN THE BOONIES
They are the best when you set up a base camp, then you can use your quickie tents for excursions

I can sleep very comfortably in the back of my truck when traveling solo. My bed consists of two closed cell foam Thermarest pads and a fleece blanket on top of that. I then use my sleeping bag as a comforter or blanket. I cant remember the last time I have slept inside my sleeping bag with it zipped up, even backpacking I lay on the pad and use the bag as a blanket. This system keeps me warm down to at least below freezing. Here are a few pictures of my sleeping set up, sorry these are the best I could find.
With the awning and the fold down side it makes for a pretty versatile sleeper. I can close the back door and open the side with the awning deployed during Summer rains for good ventilation or button it up tight when the weather really gets foul. All in all it has worked out great.

This is how I roll when my bro tags along.. He'll build himself a little shelter using the rear door if it looks like it might rain.

I have a 2-3" foam pad about 6' long. i set on that a fleece sleeping bag liner, and unzip the sleeping bad to use as a blanket.. Works out great! On multi-day trips i just roll the whole thing together and throw a bungee around it. Looks like in the above pic i used a fleece blanket on top and the sleeping bag on bottom (summer setup for warner night temps)..

I just use a thermarest in the back of the vehicle. The headroom in most cars/trucks/SUVs is on the low side so I'm not particularly keen on sleeping platforms. Instead I prefer to make the space narrower and move everything that's in the way to the side, front seats, outside, etc.

Unfortunately no pics because I got rid of the SUVs a long time ago. I used to take and fold down the rear seats and just put a rolled up foam matress down under the sleeping bags and pillows. just make sure the back area is level or sloped upward slightly where your head is, and i used to keep a couple pieces of an old bug net for cots in there, I would slip them over the side doors and open the windows to allow fresh air in and keep the bugs out.
Also I disabled the interior lights from coming on with the door switches when camping during the "Bug" season, so when it was dark out, the bugs wouldn't make a beeline for the interior lights when I opened the doors.
Biggest thing is to make sure there is enough room Front to back to lay down in the back of the SUV, often I would pass on a good deal because of the Short Wheelbase and short distance between the rear doors/tailgate and the front seatbacks.

Thats what I have done in my 4runner too. I just put down a thin pad and sleep in the sleeping bag. Only I dont know If my wife and I could both sleep in the back because it is rather tight even by myself...
