Who would be interested in an Overland / toy hauler trailer?

Hey everyone!

So, with the release of our Mark II Overland trailer coming up end of this month and with getting my wife's new rig all prepped out for Overland West, I thought it would be a great time to start yet another project! :chef:

I'm posting on here to see what kind of interest there would be for an idea i've had in my head for a while for a morph between a flatbed trailer and overland trailer.
My wife and I like to do our regular trips, but we also love to take out four wheelers / rzr. It's always been frustrating to me because we have to leave behind our Overland trailer unless we want to take two rigs.

Design;

5x10 and 6x12 sizes (roughly) with full aluminum constructed frames
Timbren axleless suspension
On board water system (water intake filtration system to take in and filter stream water, shower system, instant hot water heater)
Mounted solar system
250 amp hour battery bank
Fridge
Fold away galley space
On board air
Extended roof rack for RTT, awning, and other gear.
Extra lockable storage space for gear and items needing to stay dry and secure.

The goal would be to have the open trailer space to haul one large rzr or comparable SxS or two full size quads.

I've already run through the design and know we could do this (excluding tent and awning) for a landed price under $13k

Would love to have input from guys on here!

I would love to have a base camp trailer that can haul my RZR. With that said I wouldn't be able to afford it lol. Still like to see what you come up with.

Too little, too late for us. We had a 30' Keystone Tail Gator. Had it 10 yrs. Kids are grown & gone, so are the dirt bikes & atv's. It needed way more ground clearance. Went to a place once that had a gravel road up the side of a mountain, that got 10" of rain in a short amount of time. There were 4 washouts a foot or more deep. I had to have the wife & both kids as spotters & stacking rocks, so we wouldn't rip the plumbing off the camper. 4 Lo & 1st gears 6.3:1 in the G-56 paid for itself that day. Power Wagon had no trouble w/78:1 crawl ratio pulling it up the washed out road. Was able to start & stop & start again with no wheel spin. We have since downsized to a 2016 Starcraft AR One EXTREME 18QB. Not an off-road trailer but has enough ground clearance to get us well off the beaten path.

Sounds like a great idea. We have a modified teardrop camper with a 5x6 platform that can handle 3 dirt bikes or one 4 wheeler and a dirt bike. Hauling a a side by side would get a little heavy but I'm sure it could be done. Our little tear can go most places our FJ and Tundra can go short of rock crawling and easily handles rough mountain 4x4 trails. We use the timbren axleless 4inch lift suspension and with stock FJ wheels and tires on it she has 20+ inches of ground clearance.

Update. We've got material in for the base frame and rack. Suspension should be here in two weeks.

End of year was crazy for us.

I've been looking at similar trailers. Big concern I have is the tongue weight/overall weight ratio with a load on the platform.

What is your experience? How much tongue weight do you end up with when you have a couple bikes on the platform? What does your trailer weigh overall?

Thanks.

Happytraveler,

I haven't weighed it but I would guess unloaded the tongue weight is around 250lb. Total weight is roughly 1500lb. unloaded. With 3 dirtbikes on the platform my rough estimate is 400-500lb. on the tongue. I have had it fully loaded for a week in Moab on the stock FJ and it squatted about 1.5 to 2 inches. It felt pretty good as far as handeling, turning tc, but I'm sure the FJ would benefit from airbags with the camper loaded down. It actually squatted my Tundra more than the FJ but the Tundra has softer suspension. (oddly enough) We added airbags to the Tundra to keep it level and have no issues with the ride. The previous owner gave me a weight distribution hitch which he used as he put 2 BMW streetbikes on the platform. I've never used it since it would wreak havoc offroad. Here is a thread with more info on the camper. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/159808-Off-road-Teardrop-for-Sale

I would love something similar to my XVenture that could somehow either tow or carry my Yamaha Rhino. It would solve a major logistical issue I have at the moment.
Actually being able to tow a small trailer behind the XVenture would be Muy Bueno
