Why roof top tents?

what happens when your truck isn't on level ground? Does it shake around a lot when you're up there? On most RVs, they have jack stands underneath their RVs when they are parked. Wouldn't the same hold true for these rooftop tent set ups? That's an awful lot of weight up there that will make your truck top heavy when there's a cross wind or when someone is restless in bed.

As far as shaking, my WilderNest has two outrigger poles that keep you from getting seasick.

Well, you know, depends on how close you and your bunk mate might be. ;-) If this 'Nest is a rockin', don't bother coming in!

Sounds like most have a built in pad, I didn't realize that. Does your sleeping gear stay dry if you fold the tent up in the morning when its dewy or wet? I only spent 9 nights on the ground last year. I'm hoping to increase that this season. I'm not sure a RTT is right for me yet.

Can't speak for all roof tops, but yes, most of them are equipped with a nice sleeping platform. Here's a shot of the one in the WilderNest. It's approximately 76"x55" and mine is a 3" piece of closed cell foam, 15 lbs per cu ft density (it's a fairly firm sleeping mattress).

Since I refurb'd mine I had to make something up. Lucky me the platform is a 4x8 sheet of plywood so 48X96 and as far as the bedding goes I use 3 cheepo self inflating camp matresses $60 and for the home touch a 2.5" foam mattress topper $149. Wow much better than sleeping the ground and just as good as home, a good night sleep is almost assured.
