Nikon D5000....best camera I ever purchased. My cousin is a photographer in CO and got me to buy the D5000. It is perfect for an amature .....If you got questions let me know.

Cheers!

The Olympus line all have in camera stabilization at the cost of a few extra grams of body weight..
See, you really do learn something new everyday. I believed the Oly was sans-stabilization due to commonality of lenses with the non stabilized Panasonic.

IMO, the range of native m4/3 lens available is adequate,
And with a simple adapter the lens choice is better(now knowing the Oly is stabilized), but with all things it is never perfect for everyone. Maybe I should just write Panasonic and ask them to throw sensor shift in the dang G1 already.

With the 1.6 crop factor of a Rebel, you'll find that a 50mm prime lens is great for head/shoulders type portrait shots, but not wide enough for groups unless you stand way back. Canon's 28-135 is a very versatile single lens. It is well built for the price, has good optical quality for a non L series zoom, and covers a range roughly equivalent to 50-200mm on a full frame camera when used on a rebel. You can't really go wrong with a Canon SLR!

My wife keeps telling me she wants a DSLR. She's made mention of the Canon Rebel, more or less because of its entry level price. I'd like to get her a camera for her b-day, but not sure what to get her.

For the most part, this will be a new hobby for her. Her previous cameras have been a point and shoot Canon and an older Fuji FinePix.

My biggest concern here is durability, since two of our four kids are still little enough to want to touch everything.

Any suggestions?

I read you purchased your wife a Canon Rebel. Nice.

If anyone else is looking to get into their first DSLR w/o spending too much, my wife and I bought from our local Craigslist listing a used Nikon D40 for $300.

We checked it out in person, tested and played around to our satisfactory before buying from the local seller. Came w/standard 55-85 Nikkor DX lense. Also came with the Intro to Nikon D40/D40X DVD. Just have to keep an eye on deals on CL.

It's lite, durable (we have 2 lil kids) and impressed with the images thus far.

Occasionally you'll find great deals on lenses, and even better deals on bodies as some people buy DSLRs and then never use them.
Searchtempest.com allows you to expand your craigslist search area a bit. I've picked up tripods, flashes and tons of other accessories. For small items that can be shipped it's great to be able to search nationwide rather than just local.
Don't discount the good old garage sale either.

craiglook.com is a great utility for searching all the CL posts around the country.

I chose new vs used for one reason...warranty. If nothing else, BestBuy will replace the camera for a couple of years when, not if, my little kids get ahold of it and damage something.

Make sure you read that warranty very carefully, don't go by what the salesman told you, I guarantee you they will lie to your face.

I know people that have found out the hard way that the "no questions asked" warranty they thought they were getting from Best Buy was near worthless. It's full of exclusions and conditions, is at the discretion of management, or they would be getting a refurbished electronics instead of a new replacement.

There's a Nikon D50 for sale here. The 50 is 4-5 yrs old but grt starter. If she loves the dslr way of doing things, it won't take long before she'll be buying big lenses that interfere with offroad budget.

I started with far less a camera and still enjoy the photos.

Cut the Nikon/Canon crap and go Olympus E620 with Leica glass. Alot more camera for the money than either of those companies will give you and you will have lenses better than Nikkor or Canon ever made.

I have a F4 in my collection before anyone jumps my case
