will this fender mount work?

Hello, so I am working towards my tech cert, but I am gathering parts to install 2m in my dodge.

First I would like the antenna to be mounted on the fender. I have the cb on the pass side with this mount... http://www.amazon.com/HOOD-FLAT-EDG...202&sr=1-1&keywords=dodge+ram+fender+cb+mount

I have an extra mount just like it. will it work to mount a ham antenna?

Also what antenna would you run there? what cable?

I do not believe it will work as the mount is a 3/8x24 Thread and the antenna you are looking at is NMO which is a BIG circle type threaded base. Now you most likely could find that type of mount for your dodge with a NMO mount. Or find a 2 meter whip with a 3/8x24 base. So you need to figure out which would be better for you. For me..... I would find a 3/8x24 2 meter antenna. So if you break a mount and need to shift antennas as you talk on one band more then the other you can just change the antenna and move the coax from one radio to the other and stay in contact with whoever you are running with. ok, thanks. forgot to mention I wont be using the stud part. just the fender piece. im guessing that I can drill out the hole to make it bigger? then would that antenna work?

If you are only using the bracket I think you can then buy a NMO antenna mount with cable. Not sure how much you would have to modify the bracket to fit

That's a nice radio...I like the front facing speaker. Nice antenna, too...Larson makes good stuff. But Oldman is right, nmo is way too big for that bracket. You either need a 3/8" mount antenna or a different bracket. Either way, ground the bracket close to the truck somehow.

Make sure.you pay attention to the year of your truck. I have a similar mount for my 11 Ram. Has 3/4 hole for nmo mount. MIne is on drivers side, to keep away from the stereo antenna.

Just saw you have an 04. I also have the same radio. Mine works great with the fender mount and a 1/4 wave.

Just my 2 cents, 5' is crazy long for a 2m mobile antenna. That's longer than the antenna I have on the roof of my house. Mobile and fiberglass, I'd be worried about cracking it. For 2m mobile, I like the 18" or so 1/4 wave or dual band that don't have a loading coil, or the base loaded Larsons that are about 3' long with a black steel whip.

Here is what I just bought from AES for my antenna mount http://www.aesham.com/cable-kits/mfj-341s/ This is what I had already for a antenna http://www.aesham.com/uhf/comet-b-10/ I made my own mount for my toyota truck from a piece of scrap stainless. Looks pretty good to if I must say. I think this cable kit and antenna will work for you on your mount. Just use only the mount. I am sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Been busy. Also I agree a 5 foot antenna is way to long if your going to do any back road or trail rides. Let me know what you think

so this would work with that original mount and work good in the fender location?

didn't look real close at the length of that other one. yea 5' is too much. but I do have a 4' cb whip on the other fender side so anything that height or less is fine.

Other news, me and my buddy took our tech test this morning and passed!

the other idea is weld on a mount on the roof rack that is mounted to a fiberglass topper... any problems doing that? different antenna needed? ground wire?
