Willys Wheeler VS Rubicon

They all have a D44 in the rear now.
The Willys only adds 3.73 gears, rear LSD, Rubicon wheels and tires, and the accessories bag/stickers.

I know you can get the gears on a sport, and I think you can get the LSD as well (might only be on the Sahara).
Personally I'd look into a sport with options and save some cash, or get the Rubicon.

Its also has the Rubicon rock rails and suspension. You can get most of the options on the Willys added to the Sport but I think the Willys package comes out slightly cheaper.

I've got a '14 Unlimited Sport S. Power windows/doors/mirrors, tow package, 3.73s, Alpine stereo with bluetooth and sirius, auto-dim rearview mirror, LSD, manual trans.
Love it. 4-low and the LSD have worked everywhere I want to go for the past 12,000+ miles.

I just picked up a JKWW a few weeks ago. A Rubi would be great but the reality for me was it wasn't needed for what I want to do and not worth the extra money. Mine is pretty basic and was a good deal for what I got. Very happy with it.

What is your opinion.

What is the most suitable and better deal overland vehicle? The Rubicon or the Willys Wheeler.

Key Points:

Willys Wheeler Nicely outfitted $31,000
Dana 44 Rear
Dana 30 Front
Locking differential Rear.

Rubicon Nicely outfitted 41,000
Dana 44 Front
Dana 44 Rear
Locking differentials Front and Rear

what options are you looking at?.
I got a four door Rubicon, automatic, hardtop, remote start, with the uconnect system out the door for 34000.

Never owned a Jeep but have always wanted to so take this with a grain of salt. If the WW had a rear locker I would've said yes get it. Without it I'd personally get the sport with lower gears, no limited slip, tow package, hardtop. Then for the $5k I saved I'd buy nicer wheels, 33" tires, an ARB locker and possibly a small lift and a tummy tuck. This is about all I'd ever need and that includes running most black diamond trails out here minus Dusy Ershim and the like but that's a more pirate4x4.com territory.

I purchased a 2014 2dr 6spd Rubicon less than 3 weeks ago for 32k.(only the stuff I need and nothing I don't). Seriously considered a Willy's or building up a stripped Sport. After putting 4500 miles on my Rubicon so far I can tell you I'm glad I bought this over a Sport or Willy's. Overland vehicle means WEIGHT. You're gonna enjoy 4.10 gears while towing, bigger tires, or loading up gear on roof racks with wind resistance. I just spent 2 days and 800 miles towing 1500lbs and loved every minute of it. Averaged 18 and change while towing through the mountains of Maine/NH. I just did some 4 wheeling last night in some hilly logging roads. I was told by my buddies that have jeeps with Dana60s/Ox lockers and 36s that I would regret getting the Rubicon with such a low 4:1 transfer. NO WAY. I love being able to just crawl around with out smacking my new Jeep around. It allows me to 4wheel much less aggressively. I'm able to roll on the flats in 4low and in 5th/6th gear to keep up with the crowd. But when it's time to head back down mountains, I can put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and just let the motor crawl me back down the mountain. Much more enjoyable/less stressful experience.
It's a Jeep, so no matter what you get, you're always gonna be tinkering with it, adding accessories, modifying in some way. With the Rubicon, you have a MUCH better platform to start with.

Have you ever driven a TJ?
If you have, on a long trip is there a difference in the ride and handling in your 2 door JK Rubi?

Only a VERY modified friends. No highway, no towing. I've been a life long Toyota guy.(Tundras/Tacomas) This is my first jeep. If I was to get a TJ era Wrangler, it would be a LJ and I would build on that platform with a Mercedes diesel. (find some way to get it registered). Having said that, everyone that rides in my new 14 Rubi comments on how great the suspension is both ON and OFF road.
I have no first hand experience with other Jeeps or JKUs. but this ride on highway is way less busy than a RAV4 but not quite as nice as a Tundra. Only once in a while does a big pot hole want to turn the steering wheel on ya. I absolutely love this thing.
Great DIY camp setup. I won't hi-jack this post with my plans. :chef:

It's been said already, but ill say it again. The Willie's is a sticker model, just like the altitude, polar, sahara, dragon etc. In MY opinion, there are only two models, the sport and rubicon. You can get everything that is on the other models, put onto the sport, except the transfer case, dana 44 front, electronic sway bar and lockers. Hence why I say that there are only two true models of the JK. Now if badging and special paint colors are important, then sure get one of the sticker models. If you want a great platform to build from get the sport. If you want a great, off-the-lot vehicle, get the Rubicon. Hope this helps.

I agree to a point.
The Moab had a rear locker, steel bumper, and a winch. If that was still around, that's what I'd have in the driveway.

The Moab came with a "winch ready bumper" but can't you mount a winch to the stock JK bumper? If so wouldn't the only difference between a Moab and the Willys be the OPTIONAL rear locker?

You can do some custom fab work and get a winch in there. You can also buy a plate that mounts on top for a winch. The aev one that came on thw Moab was ready to accept a bumper as is.
