I think your view may be a little tainted since youve already installed so many. Try letting someone who's NEVER installed one install it without your input. I had a neighbor try to do it with me and we were both scratching our heads trying to figure it out.

Did a version of this today as installed new synth line on my superwinch s9000. Thanks for posting this. It was so simple but I would not have even thought about it without your write up.

As a matter of fact, I do actually still use whiplocks for the end of rope and securing the splice on my winch extensions. See this write-up I did on the extensions. My next write-up will be on Softshackles and that is how I tidy up the ends on those as well. The ones on the Winch Extensions are actaully the full Stiched Whiplocks which gives the benefit of locking the splice like standard stitching and gives the looks and contristion of a normal whiplock.

I think your idea would work just fine. There is no reason you could not leave the loop big enough to feed the hook and end through. That way all you'd have to do is lay the loop, start powering the winch in to cover the loop ends. When you go close to the Loop Bite, just feed the working end of the winch line through it and continue spooling the line like normal. The size of the bit in the loop will have not bearing on the locking properties. That will all be done with the constriction of the previous wraps on the loop end. Plus it woud be much faster and easier to do.

Pretty much as you described, only I did not go under the whole wrap, as i did not have enough line. I did not have enough line because the s9000 comes with 5/16 wire and the 3/8 rope did not want to go through the hole. Trimmed a bit and wrapped in tape, as Steve from Southeast Overland showed me, and that worked great to get it through the hole.
Here is the winch from when I first mounted it a little while back. Excellent winch, wire in fair shape, looking a bit ragged.


While I had the line off the winch I of course sanded the drum smooth but also took the time to repaint the winch housing. Looks much better IMO.


Here is close up of the rope installed. Very happy with it.
