Winch mounting ?

In the very near future I'm going to build a front bumper to match my rear. Since I acquired a winch in a trade, I decided I'll build a winch bumper. It's a Harbor Freight winch but seems to work great. I will probably upgrade in the future but not for a while. I would hate to build the bumper and find out I can't mount another winch on it. Are winches of the same capacity typically about the same size and have similar mounting points?

I think most are the same except the warn 8274. Check the warn website for details.

From my bit of research 10" x 4.5" is a fairly common mounting pattern shared by most 6k-10k winches. Draw a rectangle with those dimensions and see if your HF winch matches up

FYI, it should be the same mounting pattern as most of our winches (10.0x4.5). You know, just for future reference. (hint hint :sombrero

When I posted my ad on Craigslist, I stated I wanted a Warn or Ramsey. Unfortunately the only hit I got was for the HF turd.



The HF winch is currently on a receiver mount. I'm considering just putting a 2" receiver in the front bumper and using the winch with the receiver mount. This way I don't have to tote the added weight of the winch when not needed. However I'm concerned about approach angle. I am already limited by my small tires and height. :safari-rig:

And you also have to be careful about pulls on an angle with a multi-mounted winch - they tend to extend a good deal of leverage on the receiver if you pull sideways.

THIS was my (borrowed) bright idea on how to have a multi-mount that can be used front or back, and still be able to pull on an angle
