Winch question

I posted this at Mud as well, but with the Sequoia weighing around the same as the 80's and 100's thought I would see what other opinions I might get

I am looking for a less expensive winch to use with on my Sequoia, I don't hit the trails very often and nothing I plan to get stuck in but I want to have something just in case. I am planning for the mean time to install a front receiver so it could be used either front or rear. I know it is hard to dispute the quality of Warn a few others come in a close second mainly due to the warranty. I am planning on getting an 8-9k range and have a snatch block in the event it is not enough. I think the added price, size and weight to go to 12,000 is probably overkill. I have found some locally on Craigslist but the price difference is small enough I think buying new and having the warranty pushes me in that direction. I have read the threads on the HF winches versus the others and think it might be worth saving a few dollars and getting on of theirs and use the money I would have spent on a Warn to get synthetic line to cut weight.

What are your thoughts?

I run a HF winch, and aside from the pariah treatment from Warn owners I haven't had a single issue. If I recall, woody even has one of the new HF's in the 12k flavor on one of his rigs.

I've got an 8k on my 80 and run Viking Winch line with a snatch block for big pulls. I haven't had a single issue, and it's been submerged and lived its whole life outside up here in the waterlogged PNW.

I will also say that I probably winch less than twice a month, and not usually many times in the same day. For that kind of application, I would probably want something a bit heavier duty, maybe even a worm drive.

When it comes to winches, be sure to check Amazon.com for pricing as well. They have great prices on Warn winches, with free shipping.

I don't like warns, I have seeing them fail too many times. I have an XRC8 on my samurai that I have used for the past 4 years and it is still going strong. It always end up being the recovery winch after their Warn fails. I would suggest an XRC10 ($399) or an XRC12 ($499)

take one more look at Warn

Warn just released some of their winchs with synth rope for ~$650.
I am looking at a VR8000-S

You might want to check out the group buy I ran last month on Mud:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/winching-re...000-lbs-winch-w-synthetic-line-group-buy.html

The Titan TW12 matches up very solidly (better in my opinion) than the m12000. It uses bearings in place of brass bushings, graphite bushings in place of the plastic ones found on other winches and double lipped seals. Not to mention no bolt holes on the motor end-cap that can eventually leak and the best solenoid in the industry. All this with a Dyneema (makers of Amsteel Blue) SKS 75 12 strand synthetic rope, aluminum hauze, rock guard and wireless remote on sale for $650 ($560 was the GB price).

Check the specs and read the reviews. If, you come away from it like I did, you'll be of the opinion that this is probably the best bang for the buck currently on the market!
