winch question

I hope to start an 80 or 100 build in the next few years. I have an opportunity before me right now to pick up any Warn winch I want at a too good to pass up price. I plan on using an ARB front bumper. I think I have it narrowed down between the M1200 and the 9.5XP. The M1200 holds more cable and pulls more weight but is slower and heavier. The 9.5XP is less weight and faster but you have to have the “fit kit”. I do know that 99.999% of the time 100 feet of cable is more than enough but more is always better. Any and all comment are welcome.

Thanks

I am in no way the most knowledgeable on this, but IMHO, if you are not racing, then stronger is better then faster. Winching operations should be slow and thought out. And it is never bad to have to high of a safety factor in the strength.

Both good winches, but I'd go with the M12000.

for ****s and giggles, go to http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/line.shtml
and check out how the Warn product line up is setup:

entry level, premium series, ultimate performance, heavy weight.

Entry level are just the low end models. fine.

then there's premium..... you'd think premium would be some good stuff right? no. There's "Ultimate performance". and when you thought the 9.5XP was the ultimate, you quickly discover there's the HEAVY WEIGHT big boys series. You see how Warn markets the winches? premium or ultimate, you still got a "great winch. a premium winch.... or the ultimate winch"

then how come they are below the HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMP big boys?

Anyhow. I'll take the M12000 anyday over any 9.5xx. the M10000 and the M12000 are very smooth and inspire confidence. The 9.5 guys work too, but don't sound the same as the Ms. You can tell they are working harder. the 9.5 I hate the most is the ti (probably discontinued). The Thermometric winch. It has a smoke detector on the remote. LOL Talk about a dumbed down product.

oh, the M10000 and M12000 work and sound smoother than the M15000. I've seen the M15000 in action and it sound broken. Maybe it was a bad one.

either M120000 or 9.5XP, I hope you get the winch. It really separates the man from the boy.

Where/what kind of country do you typically go off-road? Unless you're always in the desert where a winch anchor can be a long ways away, you're better off with less winch line and hence fewer turns on the drum and way more pulling power. Most winches only pull at their rated power from the the first layer on the drum. You can always carry a winch line extension for those long pulls to an anchor. My Warn 8274 would hold 150' of line but I only have 80' (of heavier than stock) line on it and carry a 100' extension in my recovery bag. I've yet to use even the 80' on the drum.

The M12000 won't fit all ARB bumpers...check that first. Having said that the 9.5XP is one of if not the most under-rated Warn winches in the line-up. It has served me well and exceeded all my original expectations the past 6+ years.

I have an 8274. It is really fast and if needed, there is plenty of wire rope to double it up to 16K. Even doubled, I think it is faster than a planetary winch.

As spressomon mentioned, you may have an issues with the M12000 in an ARB bumper (check with them for confirmation). Also something to think about: The 9.5xp has our extreme-duty sealing; the M12000 does not. The M12000 is also 136 lbs. The 9.5xp is 87 lbs. Get the 9.5xp-s (with Spydura synthetic rope), and the weight goes down to 68 lbs.

The 9.5xp is a brute of a winch. That's what I'd personally recommend.

I would trust his recommendation over my original recommendation

So you don't like the 8274?

^^^ Not going on the front of an 80/100 with ARB bumper without significant fab mods...that's what the OP stated was his intended vehicles.

Andy, if you were to choose between M8274-50 and 9500XP, for your personal truck. Assuming they both fit the bumper. Which would you choose? No need to give reasons.

We run an M12000 in our ARB bull bar and the fitment was spot on. I don't know if that changed various years or not. It's news to me if they don't fit other bullbars of the same make/model. That being said, i still believe the 8274 is the best winch of all time, i mean... it's the only winch that has been nonstop produced for what.... 50+ years? There's something to be said there. Shoot, that and look how many folks rebuild and sell on CL all day long.

Well, since his truck is a sidekick, I'm betting he chooses the XP! :sombrero:

Mine bolted right up. You just need to order the "Commercial" bar. That's what I have.
