Window area Storage Solutions

thoughts from this reading thread:

window recess seems like a good place to grab some additional storage.

a dark bag sized to fill the recess, stored "back to the glass" may also serve as a view block to inside goings-on.

dark bag above against tinted window should all but disappear removing the "here's my laptop - grab it" concern.

suction cup hangers will spoil the illusion if it's glass they're sucking on.

however the bag is supported, cargo net against the flap side will only serve to restrain the bag and offer a place to stash small, readily needed, items. (newspaper, magazine, hat).

that's all i got so far; carry on.

I used metal shelving also in my xj great place to hang various small pouches and bags. Also a good way to keep any loose items from breaking the glass in a off camber or hard turn situation.

that looks good, but is it using the space the OP is referring? are those footman loops screwed into the interior panel, or bolted w/ backup support? any chance of a shot from the outside looking in? thanks

In my case no, it's not recessed into the window area. I'm sure it would be vehicle/installer dependent. They are footman loops and they do have back-up plates. I don't store anything heavy. Mostly toiletries and first-aid type stuff.

I gotta take a few pics, but I've completed what I was after. my window is already tinted from the factory. I bought a roll of reflectix which I will cut to fit around the suction cup mount. What I used was a bike pannier. I just used the one I had, but there are better fitting ones, that are individual for each side.

These are the suction cups I used:

they screw to pull the suction cup, and it hold really well. The little holes are perfect to pass a small hook or para cord through. The problem with modern vehicles is that the windows are not flat on the sides. This would not be an issue in a defender or an old land cruiser or old willies.; the bottom of the pannier wants to become plum. I think I figured out a way though, gotta give it a whirl.

I'm really glad I came across this thread. I've been scheming to build a storage solution for my Jeep XJ's back hatch.

In my state (Commonwealth) a SUV can have it's rear and side windows behind the front doors completely blocked. So I was thinking of covering the windows in my cargo area with aluminized bubble insulation and then using half inch MDF, upholstered to match the interior, to cover the window area. I was wondering how to incorporate the MOLLE attachment system. The steel mesh look great!

Just blocking off the windows altogether serves a coup;le purposes. It adds insulation and it keeps bad guys from seeing what I've got in my Jeep.

I gotta get on this!
