Windows XP Service Pack 3

Microsoft released SP 3 for XP to the general public through their download site and Windows Update today. I installed it on my three year old laptop, it took 45 minutes and that does not count the time spent downloading the 300+ MB file.

Is it necessary?

It's the first service pack for XP in something like four years and it has over 1,000 fixes. It's probably not necessary, but it might not be bad idea.

Basically, it rolls all the Windows updates that have occurred over the years, in to one big package, plus has some other newer updates.
