Winter Storage: Filled MFC outside car?

How long can one store gas in an MFC during the winter? Would fuel stabilizer help? I live in Chicago and it's been a mild winter but there have been random storms and cold fronts here and there. I drive a Jeep Wrangler with a gobistealth rack. I was planning on having a filled MFC sitting on top of my rack just in case. Can I actually store it outside for a long period? I also have a MWC that I would like to store outside as well but if I have to I can store that inside the jeep.

I would expect that gas would be fine through the winter, it doesn't break down that quickly. You could always just use the gas from the can every 3-5 fill ups and then refill it with fresh if you are concerned.

The water will freeze, even inside the car, so be sure to leave at least a few inches of expansion space.

As long as the fuel container is pretty well sealed to avoid condensation forming on the inside, add some fuel stabilizer and it should be fine for 6 months. Stabilized fuel will last a while, although assuming it's E10, if you get too much moisture in there, it'll separate and be useless. Any amount of water below the separation point will just be harmlessly absorbed though.

So will the mfc need to be fully filled to the brim or some space is needed?

You say MFC fuel can so I assume you mean the MFC Scepter can. While in the Army I had that type of fuel container in temps form about 0 to about 125deg and never had an issue, inside or outside the vehicle. I still have a couple and when I take them I have always stored them in the Jeep.

I usually don't fill them all the way. It seems easier to pour without spilling that way. I would use the gas in the cans every once in a while and refill them as others have suggested above.

Yes it is an mfc scepter can. Yea I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't freeze or expand or crack anything. I'll make sure seals are tight and good and I assumed I should be ok

You've got to get well below zero for gas to freeze. Even more so with ethanol-adulterated fuels. And HDPE plastics have a huge temperature range, wider than you can live and work in.
