Winter tire test

Here's a interesting test of five truck tires in snowy conditions. The winning tire, a Bridgestone Blizzak, out-performed a studded snow tire from Goodyear. BFG All Terrain AT KO2 did OK. Firestone Destination M/T did poorly.

Now, the test was at a Bridgestone facility in Colorado, so maybe a Bridgestone victory was part of the plan. Interesting results, nonetheless.

Always ran Blizzak WS50 (an inch narrower, but an inch over diameter) back when I had my subaruWRX wagon. That thing was an unstoppable tank with those tires on. The ONLY time I ever got stuck in the snow was when I got high-centered on a 3 foot bank of rock hard plow snow.

It's really a comparison of different types of tires on snow. No surprises really. It shows that snow tires work well in snow, Highway and Mud tires do not, and snow rated all terrains are a compromise.

Finally in expo white.
I cant wait to get some real snow around here so I can try out my Blizzacks. I'm suprised the BFG A/t's did as well as they did. I had them on my old Zr2 and that thing was worthless on packed snow.

Have had blizzak's on several vehicles, great winter tire.

Do you guys have any grooved pavement where you live?

I have a set of studded Firestone Winterforce, they do fairly well on snow and ice, but wonder a bit on the grooved pavement on the Interstate. Curious if the Blizzacks do the same.

Grooved pavement? Im not sure what you mean so I assume we dont.

I had the winterforce non studded (studs are illeagal here) on my 2wd s10, they were fine but I'm hoping the blizzaks are better.

^^^ I assume he means how the roads have lower grooves where the tires from vehicles generally roll from high use.

still have yet to run the blazzaks, but have used the toyo observes with really good results (both studless snows). work really good in snow and equally good as a rallyx tire. I was impressed with how well they wear in off road conditions.

got to try out the k02's in snow yesterday with the van and was impressed. I like their grip accelerating and stopping better than the toyo at's I replaced them with.

Grooved like this. Supposedly it is to prevent hydroplaning. Guessing 80% of my 26 mile (one way) commute consists of grooved concrete.

Clutch, that sucks.

Yeah it does. Luckily the snow tires are on our Trooper, which she uses mostly. Her commute is under a mile, which is all asphalt (no grooves). I run Kumho AT51's on my Tacoma...I was going to buy full on snow tires for my truck, but after seeing how they do on the Interstate, think I'll stay with the all seasons.

Finally had a decent storm come through yesterday, the Kumho's did great! Much better than the BFG's I had.

Got to do a little testing yesterday.

The Firestones have a decent "groove" to them, that coupled with the siping...guessing why they are a bit squirmy on the grooved pavement. They are however great on snow and ice. It is like driving on velcro. It is a sheet of ice out there now, they didn't even flinch.

holy crap, that does suck clutch. we see the road crews do that to our roads here before they put down a new surface and its a pita, especially on a motorcycle, but its never been permanent.

That pic I grabbed from google images...but most of all the new construction is grooved, my commute is 30 minutes West of Boise. Believe most of the grooved pavement is from the Nampa bottleneck to the 184 connecter, the connecter isn't grooved. Believe it is grooved all the way to Elsenman/Memory Rd...will have to double check. Has been a while since I have been East of 21/Gowen
