i have a identical set up and my question is.... can the negative wire of the inverter be connected to the 3rd battery negative post instead of the negative post of the first battery in this diagram? My simple reason for this is i m very tight on cable length for the inverter and want to keep it as short as possible.

To keep both banks in balance it is best if the wire to the pos and neg sides of the battery bank have the same length/resistance.

The ideal would be to run identical length -/+ wires from the batteries to buss bars.

you could swap em to wire to the inside two first then the outters.. either way is the same.. so You'd take the main negative feed to 3rd battery and main positive feed off the 2nd.. but you want it to be balanced, esp with such high loads.

If you did as you suggested, the yellow batteries would have less resistance and would discharge at a different rate, which would age out the whole bank faster.
