WK2 Grand Cherokee Off-Road Impressions

So, I'm looking to see who else has taken their WK2 off-road and what their impressions are. I took mine off-road for the first time this weekend and was a little let down. I had plans to build it up and use it for overland travel but I am now thinking it will end staying on the highway and I will find something else.

Some back story so you understand my comparisons. I had a '13 JKUR with AEV 3.5 w/ 35" tires, then had a '14 LR4. So I have had a fair share of both old school and new school tech in a machine. My '14 GC w/ EcoDiesel is a Summit, so for the moment it does still have the stock 20" wheels and tires. I do understand the limitation this places on multiple aspects.

When taking it off-road this weekend for some sights of the fall colors I had a few issues:

1) The suspension wouldn't stay raised. I never went over 10 - 12 MPH and multiple times I would look down and be at standard road height. This was slightly frustrating as my LR4 never changed its height once placed in a position.
2) Off-Road 2 height was absolutely worthless. The vehicle becomes a 5k pound pogo stick bouncing around making loud thumping noises over every bump. This was a huge letdown compared to the LR4 that seemed to float on clouds and manage its weight and wheel articulation very confidently.
3) There was a constant battle between myself and whatever gremlin had control of my accelerator. The vehicle wouldn't just crawl. It would rev itself up to 1,500-2,000 RPM's and then drop back down. I could take my feet totally off all pedals and it would do it non-stop. Was very frustrating, especially going downhill.

Overall I am very pleased with the vehicle in terms of long distance cruising and fuel consumption. Just isn't as good off-road as I was hoping it would be. Maybe 18" wheels with 32" tires would make the off-road ride and handling improved as I would be able to air down some. But that doesn't solve the inconsistent suspension changes as well as limited articulation at full height.

It was really funny to see the 2 hunters faces that I passed when they saw a brand new Grand Cherokee on a tight trail when they had a beat up pick-up truck. :Wow1:

Anyone else have any other experiences? Looking to see if I am the only one with these issues.

I've taken my WK2 off-pavement a few times up in CO. Nothing too wild, but things you couldn't get a car through. While the ride is not as smooth as it is on my LR3, I didn't have any issues with maintaining a steady slow speed or keeping the height up at OR2. I found that the dash will warn you when you're going too fast for the height and gives you a chance to slow down before lowering (just like the LR3, although without the chime). The thumping noises are caused when the suspension tops out, which it will frequently do when you raise it up, since it doesn't have nearly the travel that the LR3/4 does.

Were you in low range when you were having problems keeping it at a crawl? Did you have a gear manually selected or was it just in auto mode? There was a transmission ECU update that came out in late August which improved shifting somewhat: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_2102614.pdf

My WK2 is a Limited EcoDiesel with the ORA2 package (18" wheels, QD2)

I specifically got a Limited without the QL so I could lift it permanently, so I can't comment on the QL suspension. I can almost guarantee that 32" tires on 18" wheels would be a better fit though. I'm completely green when it comes to off-road, but recently took it to an off-road park through some (for me) tough terrain and was quite surprised. I do want a JK now though haha.

It might be a great overland vehicle, and I thought about putting money into it...but I honestly don't think it's worth it, for me anyway. I want to be able to rock crawl! Check out RRO (Rocky Road Outfitters) if you do want to go that route.

I'm running an RRO 2.5" lift with Procomp 18" wheels and 32" 275/65/18 Nitto Terra Grappler's.

Yea, I know the suspension design is very different and limited compared to the LR's. I was hoping it still wouldn't be that bad for what I call "First Gen" suspension. I had read some people's reviews that made it seem alright. I was just really let down I think since I love the range of the diesel engine.

I was in low range and I had it 2nd gear with the paddle shifters engaged trying to creep down a hill. It wasn't going to any other gear. I have read about all the recent software updates and while I have only had the shudder a couple of times and my Blind Spot Monitoring system quit working 5 minutes after purchase I still have not had nearly the problems other are complaining about. The other half keeps complaining that I need to get the BSM fixed for her but I am hesitant as everything else seemed to be functioning perfectly on the vehicle and I don't know yet if I want the software updates loaded on it.

There was just certain items on the Summit I just had to have. I have been searching for 18" wheels to put some 265/70/18's on it but after this experience I have decided to hold off.

I sure do miss my JKUR. Amazing vehicle with a modest investment. If you want to play in the rocks I don't think there is a better vehicle other than building something from scratch.

I personally have not seen many items from RRO that I find appealing. There just seems to be better products out there from other manufacturers.

Your GC does look good with a little mud on it!

Thanks, I really do love it so far...just shy of 7k miles on it.

I really am dreaming...but I'm lusting after a JK that I can have Off Road Evolution build with a 6.4l Hemi with all the offroad goodies to be able to handle the toughest trails. I REALLY want to go to MOAB, do the Rubicon Trail, and the JK Experience.

I have an extra set of 18s with 255/70-18s (I don't think 265/70 will fit), PM me if you're interested and relatively local...

I view our WK2 as more of a truck offroad. It's like taking my dad's 4-door F250 (school bus lol) offroad, but with more capability and shorter wheel base... lol.

Though, it doesn't do too bad in OR1. OR2... very rough. I view it as a highway/road warrior that can handle dirt/forest roads. Anything more complex, we take the Wrangler.

Yea, I certainly wasn't planning on taking it where my JKUR could go.

But I was hoping it would ride a little better down some simple fire roads. They were not in the greatest conditions but still, having the suspension and accelerator have a mind of their own is a little bit of an issue.

Idk, maybe you guys are talking me into sticking with it but I have also already started wondering back to the Toyota section....

Definitely make sure you have the latest ECU updates. When I took mine in for the transmission ECU update, they updated 3 other ECUs as well.
