Working on my Montero timing belt job - need a pointer, please!

Working on my 2006 Montero with 3.8 V6...

I have the fan and serpentine belt off - how do I remove the big cover prior to the timing belt covers?

The cover I mean is the one that has the serpentine belts' pulleys mounted to it.

The area I'm stuck on is on the driver's side of the engine where the power steering pump and AC compressor are --- I think there are some bolts down in that area that are holding the big cover onto the engine.

Do I have to remove the power steering pump and AC compressor?

Can't seem to find a DIY on this job anywhere, for a 3.8 Montero.

Thanks!

Not very familiar with the details on what you are doing. Do you have a Factory Service Manual FSM? If not go here and download. That should help. I can't access mine now or I would let you know what page... http://mitsubishilinks.com/
Good luck.

That's the area that hangs up alot of us diy'ers. If I can remember correctly, you do need to unbolt both the ac compressor and the power steering pump, then you'll be able to remove the drive belt bracket

If the 3.8 is the same as the 3.5 in this area than The Viper is absolutely correct. There are several bolts hidden away behind the AC compressor and power steering pump, and as I recall you have to pull both of them to remove the large plate on the front with the fan belt pulleys and such. Check my build thread - page 4, if it's the same as the 3.5 you'll see exactly the problem in those first 2 pictures.

Both need to be taken loose from their brackets and moved aside. Neither should have their lines removed. Just move them aside and work around them.

3.8 is quite different than the 3.5, just undo the bolts through the cover into the PAS pump and AC compressor. Then slide the front cover sideways out. The pump and compressor don't come loose.
