World Travel: LHD/RHD & Fuel Availability

The world has two different ways to drive, on the left or right sides of the road.

Typically, vehicles are identified as either LHD (left hand drive) or RHD (right hand drive.

Somewhat counter intuitively, these designations are the opposite of the side of the road the vehicle is operated on. LHD vehicles are driven on the right side of the road and RHD vehicles are driven on the left side of the road.

In the following graphic, red countries are LHD / right side of the road and blue countries are RHD / left side of the road.

The following table lists each country of the world's driving side as well as fuel availability.

The sun never sets on the RHD vehicles of the former British Empire!
The list of countries where unleaded gas is _not_ available is very helpful.

It would be interesting to see the countries where ultra-low sulfur diesel
_is_ available. USA, Canada, western Europe and Japan, yes. Mexican
cities that border the USA, probably. A couple of big cities in South America.
Anyone know of other locations where ULSD is sold?

Chip,

Global diesel fuel type and availability is covered in this thread:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25516

Europe's standards are different, although by 2009 <10 ppm "sulphur free" fuel is supposed to be available for road trucks there.

Mexican fuel is covered in the thread.

Lets not forget that the left/right hand drive designation is purely an academic concept in plenty of the countries listed. :)

I'm surprised that unleaded petrol hasn't made it to more places; even where older cars are prevalent there are still plenty of newer cars which will run on unleaded quite happily. I wonder what they do with the surplus catalytic converters?

Cheers,
Graham
