Would this be a good deal?

It has potential to be a good deal. 160k is around HG time for that engine (say people)... That is a truck that will be great if the PO was good to it and will absolutely murder you if it was neglected.

I think I'm going to have someone look at it. It seems like a good price. But like you said it could kill me.

I feel like there are better deals out there on older Discoverys. I sold my 2003 Disco SE last year for 9k, and was thrilled to get that. It had just over 60k miles on it at the time. Unless your are sold on buying a Series 1 , I would shop around a bit, and try to find one with less miles, and even a Series 2 if at all posible. I personaly would never buy another unless I was able to do all repairs myself. They can be expensive to keep on the road if not. Other than the CONSTANT repairs, I loved it. It just got too expensive for me to keep.

HG should be done at 90K.

I would ask for maintenance records and have it checked out by someone who knows rovers.

If it all checks out, offer $1800.

I stand corrected on the HG - my '95 went 170k with no problems at all, but as I understand I may be in the minority there... I also need to point out to the OP - are you looking for a Land Rover, or were you just browsing and found a good deal? One of the worst decisions I ever made (and would make again in a heartbeat) was to buy an Alfa Romeo Spider on a whim. If you are looking for an LR, search and be patient and find the best one you can get.

I know what you mean. My old 96 DI went to 190K miles with no HG jobber.

My current rangie has 148K with no HG jobber but I'm thinking of doing it as a preventative thing.

My 94 lwb with a 4.2L had 215k on it with only a waterpump and tuneups. The 4.0 seems to have a more agreesive schedule for the head gaskets than the older trucks. Still a good engine and the hg job isn't a big deal. Getting the heads redone at the same time is a good idea, too, and should only be around 300 more.

have you pressure tested the cylinders?

No. When the time comes, I want to put in Top Hat liners. They have a little edge that keep the sleeve from slipping. I just want to do as much preventative maintenance as possible so I don't have any issues "out in the wild" when I have the wife and chillins with me.:smiley_drive:

Big bucks for top hat liners, especially on an older motor. Better to do a complete tear down and add top hat liners. I know you can do it Dan, er I mean Steve! (Inside joke)

Sounds like an awesome toy, since my friend just dropped $4k into her '00 because of the liners.

If you ever wanna borrow my pressure tester, just let me know!

Looking to buy a land rover. Would like a older one. What year would be good to look for?:smiley_drive:
Personally I am a fan of the Series 1 Disco - I think it's better looking than the S2 and it has less electric crap to go wrong. But this is a question that always causes fights and tears - Rover owners are a testy lot :coffee:
