Not intending to bash on a thread, but is a max coupler better for over landing / off roading as compared to a pintle.
I ask because I bought an M101a with a pintle setup last month from a user on here. Drove Boston -> Oregon (no off-highwaying mind you..) but that setup tracked very very well! No swaying, including 80mph+, but I did have the trailer loaded up very heavy + even.
A bit of noise at low speed if I wasn't careful in my take off's & creaky/poppy with slow sharp turns. I think greasing the trailer side of the hitch (the circle / donut part) would probably resolve any slow speed noise- but didn't bother me enough to do anything about it.
Or is the angle -ability of a pintle setup not enough for what you would intend? I can't imagine my pintle being able to allow for my trailer to flip without taking my truck with it - but probably just about close maybe?
Previous owner had done a bunch off highway with it, including MOAB.
--sorry to glom up your thread! I did a search on here, & answered my own question. Pintle seem allrite for off highway use, but either the pintle or the lunette should rotate. Apparently it's better if the vehicle side is the one which rotates (? The pintle side) as there is less force due to the leverage actions involved. still very high forces involved, meaning special probably rather expensive sourcing of the hitch to be safe. When alls said and done those max-couplers and the like give the full range of motion safely at similar (or less) cost, with likely significant weight savings---
