WTB: Land Rover in Africa

didn't see a vehicle wanted section...

A Zambian friend of mine and I are looking to purchase a Land Rover, preferably in Zambia, or at most a bordering country. Good condition, hopefully a 110. Will be used for humanitarian aid work and camping. If you know of anything, please let me know. Thanks!

Vehicles are expensive in Zambia due to the level of import duties- new and used. Best bet is to find a vehicle in SA. SA pricing has dropped considerably on later modeled 4x4s. Also, there is a better chance of finding one with some safari equipment if that is what you want. In SA, this gear generally doesn't add to the sale price.

Lots of places to look online.

Another place- sign up for the google group email list or review the archives of lilongwe-chat@googlegroups.com

As an NGO- there may be a chance that you can circumvent import duties.

If you can stretch your search area a bit wider you'll get what you're looking for in South Africa. The vehicle market here is dead and you'll have hundreds to choose from at bargain prices

edit: aaah Luangwa got there first :)

Hi Spike

But its nice for them to see we both are in agreement on sources of vehicles.

I have bought 5 landies for overland in South Africa, and still think it is the best place to start. Besides vehicles, if any add one equipment is required, it is the best place to get that too. Example would be a frig/freezer, which maybe needed for medical work, is cheaper in SA then anyplace else I could find in East and Southern Africa.

luangwa, I've been combing that site for places to purchase. that's a fantastic website, full of info.

I'll expand my search to SA. I'll do some looking around while I'm over there this summer.

Send a PM to Spike or me before you leave. Spike is in SA and can keep an eye out for what is your preferred type vehicle, how loaded, and price range. I will check around also. There are some forums we participate in, so could be a good source.

I might be encouraged to even place a want in luangwablondes for you.

Most of my buddies who do aid work in Africa got used trucks from Japan shipped in. They found it was cheaper and that they could even get better trucks. I will look around and see if I can find the agent they used.....
