WTB: Laptop ASAP

Tim and Kelsey get lost..
I need a laptop for the Four Peaks Pickup. Mine decided to die today of all days! I'm getting by with my old desktop from the 50's, ;) , but I need something I can work from on the run!!

Does anyone have a decent laptop they want to let go of.

OR

Are there any great deals out there. Say, $500 and under. I check Pricegrabber.com regularly, but are there some brands to stay away from etc? This laptop will be used in my truck while I work to stay on top of things so tough and small are not a bad thing! :1888fbbd:
Any opinions on this: http://computers.pricegrabber.com/laptop/m/83716338/st=product/sv=title/

What exactly do you need *this* laptop to accomplish?

I have a really old Gateway (?). Not even sure of the specs...but it runs windoze, and all the basic office programs. I bought it used, and never used it (was going to use it for a cheap computer based nav set up in the jeep...but the 276c does all I need).

Probably slow, and not what a gamer would want...I'll pass it on to you for what I paid for it.

$50.

Comes with a free pic of John Shotts 100 series as wallpaper...:snorkel:

I would just run down to Costco and buy a base model. Put Ubuntu on it is as a dual boot with XP. If you have a problem, they take it back and their prices are rock solid. if you have more time, get a used Toughbook and max it out.

Thanks, the tigerdirect looks like pretty good prices!

Goodtimes,
I need it for lots of internet with my remote verizon card. From now until the clean-up I'll be in bfe a lot. It needs a couple of USB slots. A dvd drive would be cool if its my new permanent laptop. If its just something to hold me until I find a permanent one, its no big deal.

Carlyle,
What is Ubuntu? Okay, I'm stupid, but can you explain these parts to a dummy?
"Put Ubuntu on it is as a dual boot with XP."
"get a used Toughbook and max it out."

Asus Eee Pc

ASUS EEE PC is cheap, reliable and small.

There is also a 901 model which is a bit cheaper. My older 701 model runs Linux and works fine (even before I upgraded from Xandros to Ubuntu) but this one has Microsoft Windows installed and I'm sure that's fine too.

Cheers,
Graham

Thanks for all of the info. The ASUS looks nice, but I'd like to try and have a dvd player as well.

Jon,
I'll trade you the KTM for that laptop as long as you through in your 4runner and Danica says Ernie is ours then...:xxrotflma

It looks like that old laptop I have probably isn't up to everything you want...although it does have USB ports and a CD drive.

If you find yourself in a pinch, Marisa and I are heading North on Friday (on our way to Denver, via Prescott)....I'll rent the thing to you for a beer (payable on Feb 7th).

How about a IBM T42 Thinkpad, it's at home but some of the specs are, DVD 512k memory, with a port replicator. I'll get the rest of the specs tonight. The four years I've had it, its been problem free but I should have gone with a desktop because it never leaves our desk expect for trips to play DVDs.

I picked up a new Acer Aspire in Ensenada a couple of weeks ago for $445 out the door. 120gb hard drive, 2.13 GHz, 1gb ram,15.4" crystalbrite lcd screen, dvd and cd burner, wireless connect, firewire, s video out and USB 2.0. Plus the store added any programs I wanted for free . Also downloaded all my files and photos from the dead laptop I needed to replace. Since my hard drive on the old laptop is still fine I found I can buy a cradle from B&H Photo for $15 that will allow me to install the old drive into it and use it as a back up. Sweet deal

goodtimes, Thank you sir. I may take you up on that if mine isn't able to be fixed.

Man I love this forum. Thank you guys for all of the help and offers. A buddy of mine who is a self professed computer geek thinks he can fix mine. Woohoo. I hope he can.
If not I'll need to take one of you up on your offer.
