x2 on the digital copy online. So far I have searched and searched and have found chapters 8 18 23. Thats it. All good info but I am hoping we can get some kind of a book swap going for those of you guys that have yours memorized. You know take a deposit and send it over and then refund the guy when he is finished photo-copying...oh I mean reading it:) Or take a bit of the deposit for your own troubles...shipping ect. Sure would help those of us who don't have it out:). In the meantime I just ordered his new offroad book. So I will be sure to post up my impressions and info on it. Plus would be happy to pass it along when I am done. Cheers

I would be interested in taking a quick look at it when you are done.

The new edition of Four by Four Driving is an excellent product as well. Not as expedition oriented, but worth every penny. IIRC it's the third edition, with Land Rover Driving, and Four Wheel Driving being the first two...

Overland Video has 'em....

My copy of Tom Sheppard's book is one of my most prized possessions - I've been a big fan of his since the days when he used to write articles for the English magazine "CAR" back in the eighties. His credentials are impeccable and I hold him in such regard that seeing his name on the list of contributors for "Overland Journal" was enough to convince me to become a charter subscriber to that magazine.

There is so much good information in this book it's hard to describe it all. One of my favorite chapters is the one on vehicle maintenance - he has a "nightly checklist" that is extremely thorough and comprehensive. If you are in a situation where your survival depends on your vehicle a breakdown could prove to have some very serious consequences. An abridged version of his checklist could be the key to keeping your vehicle reliable as a daily driver and the full checklist can mean you actually get to enjoy your vacation instead of breaking down in the middle of nowhere (I've done both - its a lot more fun to have a running truck).

I don't know that I'd be willing to spend much over $300 for a copy but the information in this book can be a lot more valuable than that in certain situations. If you can find a copy - its worth picking up.

Bad news...

Heard back from my contact today:

I'm afraid we no longer have any copies available. Tom Sheppard is currently in the process of trying to arrange a re-print so I will put your contact details on file and let you know if and when it becomes available.

So it looks like you will have to wait for the reprint. I will post hear if I get an update.

Thanks for the update. I feared that may be the case. Looks like I will have to content myself with his 4x4 book. I appreciate your efforts though. Let us know if you hear anything on it

With all this interest in the book, I wish I hadn't sold mine for only $150...and I felt a bit guilty at that price. I should have kept it around and sold it on ExPo, I could have retired :)

I'm glad to say I have one (Softcover field guide) in my library. As far as "Elitist" TS recommends you use the thing as a "base for a highlift" and not to be read cover to cover, but used as a reference manual. That's not very highbrow to me.

Funny, I was just making a joke about the hilift :)
