XJ needs a new muffler

It's full of holes.

At least I found the source of my "exhaust leak" sound.

What the best "cheap" muffler? Pep boys, vato-zone, etc...

We don't have weather here, so I'm not worried about corrosion resistance too much. A bit louder and throatier would be fun...

How about the Cherry bomb turbo? any other suggestions? I'd like to spend like $40.00 or less.

pep boys has a walker universal for $24.99. Not bad. I'll have to do some research.

a flowmaster is like $93.00. I've heard this muffler on the 4.0L can drone pretty heavily at speed, so I think those reviews + the price makes that a no-go.

Don't stray too far from OEM, IMHO. I've had a high-flow muffler from a popular brand I cannot remember, and at idle it sounded nice, but at freeway speeds it gave me a headache. The XJ's don't have much noise-dampening qualities about them, as you probably already know. I wonder if there's a performance muffler/cat-back system that doesn't pride themselves in noise-making...

Yeah, I've heard the same advice from a few people. I'll likely go with whatever OEM replacement they have and just get new clamps and be
done with it. The outlet from the cat and the tail pipe are in excellent shape, so I don't really think a catback is necessary.

10-4. I'll snap a few pics when I install, too.

I can't believe I didn't check the muffler sooner, with its propensity for collecting moisture from the road AND from the engine.

I can actually stick my finger inside the muffler from the bottom...haha...Loooo-ser!

I see your in San Diego... Might try Ed Hanson's muffler shop in Casa De Oro. He can help ya out or at least send you in the right direction!

Dynomax currently has a $50 rebate on their catback system.. so total would be roughly $50 for a muffler and tailpipe. If ordered through Summit it might even be free shipping?

I run this and it's a nice low rumble like you mentioned, not loud and no droaning at highway speeds like the Flowmaster i had in the past. It dawned on me one day i was chasing away the wildlife sightings i was out there hoping for.

I'll see if i can dig it up the rebate..

Both Jegs and Summit Racing have the system at 142 now, i dont remember paying that much.

I put a flowmaster 50 series on mine and it doesnt drone. It has a nice throaty sound, but not obnoxious like a 40 series. I also installed a high flow cat at the same time. My muffler was shot too, thats why I swapped.

stumptaco - request of parts used

stumptaco - what high flow cat did you use and do you remember how much it was??? Did you notice much of a MPG difference after the new cat and muffler??

It was a magnaflow cat, if I remember correctly. I quit worrying about gas mileage when I started driving a 6.5" lifted, big tired, barn door. Cant help you on that one.

Kinda like throwing a chair off the Titanic, not going to make much difference.

I have Cherry Bomb Turbo Mufflers on both my XJ and ZJ. Sound good, not too loud. And only $24 @ Autozone... NO, not the red glasspack...

yeah, I heard the turbo's are not the cliche LOUD cherry bombs. More of a subtle, refined sound. (yet still sublimely macho...lol)

Here's a question. Can I make a muffler that has a 2" outlet work on my system that is 2.25"? is it going to make a difference if I clamp rather than weld?

the Pep boys application lists a Walker setup that has 2" in and out. I know one of the outlets, OEM is 2.25"....

hmmm...

Another vote for the dynomax set up. I've run mine for about 4 years, and it is not loud at all. Nice looking tip on it as well.

I know you only asked about a replacement muffler but if the rest of your exhaust system is showing signs of compromise there's a pretty good deal on a CatBack right now. Dynomax has a $50 rebate on their aluminized systems. This would put you into a whole CatBack system for less than a hundred bucks...just throwing it out there. :)
