I believe nobody has a setup on a first gen other then the Expedition xterra which I'm sure you've seen. I tried to fit standard size batteries under hood didn't seem possible do to limited space. I considered mounting it on the frame opposite the fuel tank with a frame box from a ford van. But, found a large single diehard battery to be suitable for my needs.

ronin that is a fantastic solution...thanks for sharing!
I think the original dual battery Gen1 X was Gothamist (not sure if you recognize the name from the old school Gen 1 X forums) but none of his pictures are available online anymore.
Anyways, you've inspired me!
I made lot of room in the passenger-front area for accommodating a small starter battery (Odyssey PC925) and an average house battery (Optima yellow) -- i.e. cut & bent a lot of fender sheet metal; but now, with your configuration, I think maybe I can put a large house battery in the stock battery location and an average-sized starter battery in driver-side front location, after doing the requisite air box, etc., modifications.
Thanks again!

Pair of odyssey 1200s fit well sideways. Make a tray and mounting plate out of scrap aluminum, relocate a bunch of crap, use a bunch of cast-off battery mounts and cable remnants, and voila. Used a blue sea acr on one side of the plate and a solar controller on the other.

Kodiak industries http://kodiakinc.com/powersystems/dualbatterykits.html for a kit to be made and sold.
this was a one off using an existing kit. and modifying it. The great thing about this approach is that it uses as many existing holes and nut mounting points that already exist as possible with very little fabrication.

Nice show of dual batt setup in 2G Xterra...but the OP is looking for 1st gen Xterra setups, which is much more difficult compared to 2nd gen X's, based on underhood space available.
