If you are looking for xterra info check out thenewx.org. Xterranation is mainly just cut and paste jobs from thenewx. Shoot me a pm and I can send you over some links on mods to the second gen x that will make it a much more capable expo rig.

If you like Nissan maybe consider a way to import a Patrol from Canada. They are a true 4x4 1 ton truck with a 4.2 diesel and built like a tank. Great Expedition rig used by the UN and a variety of other international organizations. You can walk into any Nissan dealer, anywhere and order parts. They have a high roof version that comes very handy as well. Extremely reliable truck!

If you're curious about them have a look at what I've done to mine which is expo ready, it will give you a good idea of its possibilities...

Good luck with your project!

If you're a Nissan guy. I think the Titan would be a far better choice. Just as many seats, more adaptable cargo bed, better towing.

But Nissans are way too small for me. I haul too many bikes, assorted trailers, and like 1 ton solid axles. I'm not rockcrawling or squeezing my truck down Jeep trails, that's what the bikes are for.

I should add...

The Patrol has fr&rr Dana60 solid axles, coils and disc brakes at all corners, gets 20mpg or way better if converted to run on WVO which it loves, can sit up to 7, is usually very low mileage (a 1994 can easily be found with less than 100k miles) and cost between $12,000 to $22,000 depending on equipment and condition. So far, I haven't found much truck for the same money... But I'm bias! ;)

titan is interesting, but mpg is worse from what I read.

I need an enclosed trunk for my dogs as well, two huskies.

Yes the mileage is far worse in the titan. I get over 20 mpg with the v6 in the xterra which equates to much better range, and less need to carry additional fuel. No need for extra fuel means no need for a truck bed. Plus you can sleep in the xterra, and when you aren't, I can carry my Alaskan malamute and still have room for four adults, or with the seats out or folded, room for cargo.
