Xterra question (newb)

Thanks guys, I'll play with it more when I buy it this week. I did push the lever down and everything but it was giving me some problems going in, I probably didn't engage it all the way like you said.
And Nasko, I'm driving a 5.2 AWD ZJ right now so I'm used to bad gas mileage. I'm looking forward to driving a manual, I've had lots of problems with autos in the past :roost:

Getting it in 4lo is a little tricky the first couple of times, or simply as mentioned above, new fluid is needed.

I did the same thing when I first got mine. Try lo and 2nd and 3rd gears. Should be smother. And for lo and 1st, try letting the clutch out with out using the gas. Once you go to larger tires the bouncing in lo and 1st goes away. I went to 33x12.5r15.

Its possible you didn't properly engage 4lo but it seems more likely that using 4lo on concrete with a stick caused the bounce, just my guess. I've done something like that before when I had a jeep and there wasn't anything wrong with the car, just me.

This was my thinking. 4lo in first gear has quite a bit of gear reduction, and if you weren't super ginger with the throttle, you could have caused the truck to surge forward. An instant later, a slight reduction in throttle pressure, either caused by the surge or on purpose, let the power off, then you put it back on, and so on. Happened to me when I had my old 79 Chevy with a 4 speed. First gear, 4lo, you even looked at the throttle and the truck started to buck quite a lot.

Stoneydude, did you end up getting it? I forgot to add to my previous comment that these 3.3 are interference engines and you have to be careful about the maintanence of the timing belt.
Ramiromunoz, I stated my preference for the forums. Of course, others may differ, but in my view xterranation has maybe 1/10 of the info the other two have. I also stated my preference for the 2nd Gen trucks, hence the recommendation for thenewx.org. That is just my opinion, yours may differ. Cheers

Generally, you should not use 4lo on pavement, unless you know all of your tires have worn perfectly even. You may damage it on dry pavement. Look for a dirt road, follow the instructions, and if it still does it, you should look for a different one.

If you had it in 4LO and puhed the throttle as if n 2HI and let go it would "buck" and feel as if an unexperienced manual driver. It has a 2:1 reduction o it will be more entivie, especially driving on pavement and if you aren't used to it.

I used to have a 98 toyota 4x4 manual and the behavior you're describing happened because of my foot being moved by momentum moving me back and forth and hitting the gas pedal. I done the same thing in a few manual vehicles sometime on purpose sometimes not.

This week has been hectic helping my parents move and we haven't found the time to go out there, next week for sure. I'll post up pics asap.
If I could find a second gen in my price range I would rather have that but so far none with decent mileage have come up. The one I'm looking at is pretty clean though and one of the best 4x4's under $7k with only 131k miles.
