Hi All,

I have a Yakima skybox

https://www.yakima.com/skybox-pro-21

and wondered how it will hold up over periods of severe corrugations (washboard roads) ? Has anyone used a similar roof box and has some real world experience on how they might perform? I've used it lots on Moreton Is. And other beach work. Thanks for any help.

Cheers

I have a yakima box similar build style. Its a 2004 model. I always try to mount it with as much bar spread as possible and as little over hang with packed weight heavy stuff center vs the ends. Its held up with all our abuse. Just keep in mind its really easy to over load the jumbo boxes. 150lbs is pretty much their target max weight. Keeping weight out of the ends reduced the twisting Ive noticed when heavy items are in the ends.

I've run a Thule box for a couple years and 10+ trips all with lots of washboards and it has held up better than I thought it was going to...

X2 on max bar spread and packing technique.

No problem. I put an old yoga mat in the bottom of the box to keep things from rattling so badly on rough roads, but those boxes are pretty indestructible.
