YJ clutch help...

Ok so my buddy bought his first YJ two days ago, not a bad price but heres the issue:
Pulled to a stop sign, depressed clutch, and...... Nothing!
Clutch stayed to the floor, no pressure left in clutch..

Actions taken: He killed the engine, restarted and put the Jeep into reverse, the clutch never regained pressuer and he drifted back to the curb... (where it sits now)
The odd thing is its stuck in reverse! CANNOT break it free, tried to put the 4wd in N and still nothing.. Never seen a standard do this..

*We already drained and bled the clutch line and still no pressure..

The YJ does have an internal slave and master for the clutch... (not sure about the lingo (not a ASE at all)

Before he has a heart attack (and tells the wife) is there something we're missing??

Help is appreciated..

Most likely the slave cylinder is shot. Sometimes pressure on the driveline will make it difficult to shift out of gear (even when turned off).

Try rocking the Jeep forward and backward with the engine off. Then try the shifter again to see if he can change gears.

Depending in the year, if it is the slave clutch, it is an easy fix. The last years of the YJ had an external slave clutch.

2 Bolt to take it of the tran. easy to veryfy.

First, check clutch master cylinder oil level. In hood, on the fire wall driver side. If it is low, either ran out of oil, or slave is shut or wide open because of pressure plate bearing went trough the pressure plate.

Any how, you will have to remove the slave from the tran to verify. Go from their.

Will be looking into pulling it all out now and busting knuckles...

Did you check for leaks? Check the bottom of the bell housing where the inspection plate is. If the slave is leaking it should be dripping from there.

Does the pedal freely swing by any chance? If so then it could be just the master. If it is then it's a lot easier to fix and only takes a few minutes to swap that. If it's the slave though, you will probably want to replace the master as well.

When my master went it took two people pulling the shifter to get it unstuck. Then had to drive off the trail and then home with no clutch.

'87-'93 will have an internal slave. '94-95.5 will have an external. '93 was a weird year where they had a one off internal slave. Before Chrysler had problems with their slaves coming form the mfg. They were known to leak. So they switched mfg. and changed it for '93 then went back to the external in '94. No recalls were issued even know this was a fairly big issue. It just wasn't a safety issue and the clutch is considered a wear item.
