what;s the difference between the ZR2's and regular 4x4's besides the 8.5 rear?

Im not 100% sure on the newer ones but I did some research on the older ZR2's and they had a wider stance, bigger frame, Bilstine shocks, bigger tires, lower axle gearing, and I believe something was different with the transfercase.

The ZR2 (most years) came with the G80 rear LSD, a couple of inches additional height achieved through relocation of the front control arms and different rear springs, 31 inch tires, different shocks, 3.73 axle ratios and fender flares. There were some minor sheetmetal differences as well to accommodate the changes.

I used to have an '01 ZR2 Blazer. I have quite a few pics on my other computer and I'll post a few up. That Blazer, and some of the adventures I had with it, are what introduced me to alot of the guys here on ExPo many moons ago. I liked the old girl, but I definitely like my TJ Rubicon quite a bit more.

For what they were/are, I think the ZR2s were a pretty capable vehicle. I took my Blazer to some amazing places and it did some neat tricks to help get me there. The "locker" didn't do much that I ever noticed, but the 3.73 gear ratio with 31" tires and a pretty decent low range worked to get me to those nice places.

Pics will follow. I still see a few ZR2s around. I really think they were some great looking trucks and Blazers.

I had a ZR2 before, and a my first 2 years in the Navy.... loved that little truck.... did plenty. Took a phenomenal amount of abuse too....

If they made a 4door ZR2, I would own one....

Bikemobile, I love your truck! I would love to have a topper just like that. Single cabs are so rare these days.

It's nice to see the ZR2 getting some love here. I've had mine for almost 5 years and I love it. It only has 54,xxx miles and has a long way to go.

Unfortunately I have decided to put it up for sale within the next few months. Reasons being lack of after market support and passenger space. It is a great 4x4.

I've posted a few pics of my Z on this site, but here are a couple more. :smiley_drive:

When I was shopping for my ZR2 a matching cab height topper was a requirement. Every truck ive ever owned Ive wanted a topper and never wanted to pay retail or been able to find one used.

Did they come in a crewcab?
No. Only one was made by GM as a prototype 1999 SEMA Baja Crew Cab

baja2.gif

Over the years there have been four made for SEMA by various aftermarket retailers (Gallery)
None ever went to production. None of the north american crew cabs had the RPO ZR2 package. 1999-2000 were conversions. 2001 was the first year of production and 2004 the last.
In 2002 an appearance package was offered. RPO ZR5. It was nothing like the ZR2 offroad package.

And another one of my Z.

I sold it in May of 2004 when I purchased the CTD. I miss how it handled and drove, but I don't miss the G80 locker or replacing ball joints and idler arms...
