Did the 94-97 SR ever come with 4.90 gears and air locker?

Oh okay I understand now. A combination of engine size and gear ratio tells you how big cool!

Yes I did it did not mention anything about which rear end I would have... which is what I wanted to know.

I read through it twice before I even posted here. I knew what gears I had but not which size diff I had.

Did you even read the link I provided??
JnM's correct.

i suspect you simply didn't understand or absorb what you read....

The first reply on that thread clearly states that the 3.5L's came with 4.90's and the larger ring gear while the 4th post indicates the ratio is stamped/marked on a tag on the diff housing.

Okay so that would tell me I had a 9.5" rear over the 9 in which you said both came with 4.90 gears?

That was what I wanted to know. I know what gear ratio I have but if it was available in two different rear end sizes I was just wonder how to tell which size rear end I had. And then my next question is, are the gear ratios approximates numbers or dead on?

I read the post about the tag on the diff but I have not seen mine yet even though I have been under there so I have no numbers at this point to go off of.

Okay so you can the 4.90 gear ratio with a larger ring gear 9.5 rear or the 9.0 smaller with I am to assume a smaller ring gear.

Is that right?

Read again I found the larger ring part but it sounded like a question to me and I didn't see it answered so I didn't want to just take it as gospel.

Okay so I want to apologize if I seem frustrated. I was just trying to learn some info, and I was feeling like I was getting vague answers and information that would be better suited for someone with knowledge about how this all should be. All my knowledge is based on repair not upgrading. So I have to learn this stuff now. I can rebuild anything on a car and even make electric upgrades, this kind of stuff suspension and gearing is beyond what I know.

Again I want to apologize and say thanks for helping me understand it a little better.

No need for an apology. It's frequently hard when learning something new and you're not sure about internet sources so your additional question is certainly justified.

I can also see how it's tough to ask someone "Are you sure you're correct?" when they've given an answer. On one token you don't want to offend them but by the same token we all need to confirm the information is correct and valid.

How I've done it over the years is by reading through the forums and doing my best to identify who seems to know their stuff. Even then it doesn't hurt to re-ask the questions already answered in prior posts to confirm that's still what everyone believes to be correct. It does help to note that you've seen it posted before and you're asking to re-confirm it's still accurate.

Of course if you haven't searched first or read what you've found most will ask you to do so first before asking a question that's been asked many times before.

Ooooo, I wanna come. I also need to go to the pick n pull.

I visited the pick n pull on 33rd south last weekend. They had 2 gen 2 monteros and one fairly nice gen 1 (blue, clean interior at that point) I stumbled across. If I recall correctly there was one gen 2 SR (96) and one LS (earlier, I believe). Both were pretty ravaged but at that point the SR rear end was still sitting under the truck.

Okay I went and found my stickers on my Diff's and now I have a question and I have googled and checked wire but can't figure out what the other letter number combo means on my stickers My front diff say NM6 and the rear reads L16 do these mean anything or are they just random.

Easiest way to find out what diff you have is to look at the vin stamp under the hood, located on the passenger side firewall. It should tell you gearing that came factory on that vehicle.

Oh yeah I did that I know I have the 4.9's I just was curious if anyone knew what the other numbers mean. I am just wondering. I can't really find anything online anywhere about the what I assume is a diff code.

From what I have been able to figure out looking at diagrams I have a locking type diff. But not really sure. I have yet to do the basic off the ground test but I will do that Friday I think.

To help muddy the situation further... ;)

If you have a diff lock switch (air locker) then you have a locking diff... unless someone (unlikely) installed a Detroit type locker from Australia. Otherwise, you'll have either an open diff or an LSD.

Now that said, it's entirely possible that your diff/compressor and associated hardware is damaged preventing proper actuation. Additionally it's possible albeit unlikely an air locker was installed but the previous owner neglected to complete the install of the compressor to actuate it.

Doh I meant LSD or according to the ASA I could also have the hybrid LSD, sorry about that. I figure these little code numbers would tell me since in the Wire post the Jeep posted it had a post talking about letter codes to let people know what they had I just can't find a code cheat sheet.

Unlike other vehicles where you can almost consider the VIN number as gospel, with Mitsu's I only occassionally use the VIN / code numbers and only as a general guideline. Instead I prefer to rely on physically confirming what's there and especially because it's easy to tell if there's a locker.

I noticed that about the VIN kind of vague.. I will have to do the jack up test on Friday to be sure since I cannot for the life of me find or figure out otherwise.
