I'm resurrecting this thread again. I have a (new to me) 1999 Montero and I'm in the middle of replacing my transfer case shifter and am fearing the worst. - I drove the Montero into the garage and it drove fine all last week in 2H. I pulled it into the garage, removed the console and remove the shifter. When I went to reinstall it, I realized I needed to adjust my transfer case forks into 2H.
The 2WD/4WD fork will move with a little leverage forward and backward. The Hi/Lo fork will not budge. I'm trying everything to get it into the right arrangement TONIGHT. I really need help, as this is my daily driver. If you have time and have done this yourself, I'd really appreciate some assistance. 512-5o7-6978.
Anyone have a similar issue? Is there something I need to do to get the Hi/Lo fork to move? When the Hi/Lo fork is moved forward, who far forward does it go? It seems like the 2WD/4WD fork moves to within 1/4" of the front of the box. The Hi/Lo is down about an 1" toward the rear.
This is what it looked like when I opened it up. This should have been in 2Hi (so I'm not sure what the Hi/Lo fork is doing to far rearward.
So, based on THIS...
I placed mine in this configuration...
However, this doesn't seem right a the Hi/Lo lever doesn't appear to be far enough forward when compared to the 2nd image. At this point last night, I reinstalled the shifter and it seemed to shift from 2WD to 4WD fine, but would not engage 4Hlc or 4Llc.
So, I disassembled it agin and am now praying that someone can assist me and tell me what I'm missing. - Hell, I'm even texting eurosonic for Emergency Assistance!
