LOL, okay in my defense I have a very large cupholder screwed into place that blocks view of that particular switch! I didn't even know that switch existed. LOL
I'm sure that solved it :)

No. Different transfer cases, different shift pattern but i wouldn't be suprised if it bolted up although that doesn't make it correct.

Thank you, i was under impression it is the same because in the bulletin on the first page it says "AFFECTED VEHICLES 1997-2001 Montero Sport models equipped with 4-wheel-drive". Any suggestions where else i can find it? i've been checking car-part and so far it seems that people considering Montero as Montero Sport

Both the Montero and the Sport had the problem in that era, but with them being completely different setups it certainly sucks that a lot of salvage yards don't think there is a difference. I've seen it so many times when a dude orders a part and gets a Sport part, MMNA should have just called them something else to avoid the confusion.

Bringing back from dead (cause Zombies are cool now)

Well this happened to me today about 200 miles away from home and 20 miles into a 60+ off road loop. At first I thought it was in 4HLc, figured ok no biggie. 10 miles later I grenaded the driver side cv axle (pictures when I retrieve my truck). Managed to pull out the inboard section of axle and leave the outboard spline and maybe 10% of cage attached. Ran it in 2wd and (4LL) the next 30 miles engaging the rear locker when need be (spooky during the steep upward sections). When I got back to the fire road I noticed that at 30mph I was turning 3500 rpm. Uh oh. Couldn't get it to move out of 4low so managed to get it trailered to Petaluma, where I'll retrieve it tomorrow and start on repairs. Hoping I just need to realign forks or add a (white ball). PnP here I come.
Good times :sombrero:

Quick Update on transfer case lever, w/Questions

Ok, got my old lever out (red ball was long gone-nothing left). When I got the new (salvaged lever), I noticed the lowest most boot with the vent hole was split so that when the lever was in the 2wd position boot was wide open-see pic.

1st question, how important is this to be sealed?
2nd is there a way to patch; RTV or gorilla tape or should I pull the replacement off my old lever?

and 3rd-If I need to pull the replacement off my old lever how the heck do you separate the gold (outer lever) from the inner to get the boot off? I removed the c-clip and both washers but it doesn't seem to unscrew and tried driving it off with a punch no dice. Here are the parts I'm trying to separate.

Thanks Josh
Edit: well I separated the two levers glued with rubber bushings. Don't think I could comfortably strip down the new to me one w/o damaging it, so I think option 3 is off the table. Leaning toward rtv and cross fingers.

Is the boot stretchy enough to gently shoehorn over that gold lever?

There is a enough oil that splashes around in there that the split boot will ooze a bit over time. A piece of black gorilla tape, some RTV, or black silicone should be sufficient.

I have a question in this area of shifters, replacement of the small rubber boots that are attached to the shifter assemblies where they bolt to the case, I can't image that I can pull them down over the control lever which is a full inch in dia when the top hole of the boot is less than 1/2 inch, same with the boot on transfer lever. Any expertise with this!

My shifter was replaced by the previous owner after the ball fell apart. I can access all 3 modes with it, if I remove the center console. 4 wheel Low is so far forward it hits the plastic. Is there a way to move all of the linkage back ( i guess forward) or do we think the guy I bought from put a different model shifter in? Thanks!

I'm resurrecting this thread again. I have a (new to me) 1999 Montero and I'm in the middle of replacing my transfer case shifter and am fearing the worst. - I drove the Montero into the garage and it drove fine all last week in 2H. I pulled it into the garage, removed the console and remove the shifter. When I went to reinstall it, I realized I needed to adjust my transfer case forks into 2H.

The 2WD/4WD fork will move with a little leverage forward and backward. The Hi/Lo fork will not budge. I'm trying everything to get it into the right arrangement TONIGHT. I really need help, as this is my daily driver. If you have time and have done this yourself, I'd really appreciate some assistance. 512-5o7-6978.

Anyone have a similar issue? Is there something I need to do to get the Hi/Lo fork to move? When the Hi/Lo fork is moved forward, who far forward does it go? It seems like the 2WD/4WD fork moves to within 1/4" of the front of the box. The Hi/Lo is down about an 1" toward the rear.

This is what it looked like when I opened it up. This should have been in 2Hi (so I'm not sure what the Hi/Lo fork is doing to far rearward.

So, based on THIS...

I placed mine in this configuration...
27625066_557144487980498_5827577226152216750_o.jpg

However, this doesn't seem right a the Hi/Lo lever doesn't appear to be far enough forward when compared to the 2nd image. At this point last night, I reinstalled the shifter and it seemed to shift from 2WD to 4WD fine, but would not engage 4Hlc or 4Llc.

So, I disassembled it agin and am now praying that someone can assist me and tell me what I'm missing. - Hell, I'm even texting eurosonic for Emergency Assistance!
