Opinions please!! Buying a new truck!

Research, research, research!

When I went looking for a 3/4 ton diesel, I looked at the Chevy, Ford and Dodge, pre DEF/DPF, because of the lack of use it will see. They are all excellent trucks. :)

The Chevy didn't have enough breakover angle without a lift for what I need, and I can't do much lift due to pulling a 5th wheel. Otherwise it's an awesome truck. Really disappointed it wouldn't work, because it's a beautiful driving truck.

I almost went 6.0 Ford, because really nice ones are a dime a dozen. My thought was to buy it, and have it shipped to Arizona (Bullet Proof Diesel) for all the mods. All in on a real clean F250 would have been just over $30K. From everything I researched, there is one specific year, that once "modded", is pretty much trouble free. I *think* it was the last year of the 6.0L. Great info on the Ford diesels here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php.

I ended up with an '07 Dodge with the 5.9L, at right about $28K, because it ticked all the boxes. Darned close though between the Ford and Dodge for my specific use (90% on road, but the 10% off road stretches the limits of any pickup, let alone a heavy arsed diesel).
Lots of great info on the Dodge trucks here:

They all have their issues, and work arounds. The more informed you are, the better chance of getting the best truck for your buck.
I spent months reading the Ford, and Dodge forums before going shopping. It was a tremendous help.

Best of luck!

Had 2 different 08 Dodge Cummins 6.7's. Both lost #4 (trying to remember) rod bearings at a little over 200K.

My 2007 5.9 runs cool, has been extremely dependable and is easy to service. Ton's of room under the bonnet.
It's had a Smarty tuner since day seven and now has the far better EFI tuning on it. I keep my foot out of it until I need it. I feel a stock 5.9's a toad without a little electronic coaxing. Same with the Powerstroke 7.3's I drove.
My 1800# wet camper's been on 99% of the time.
Concerning deletes, eventually emission testing will be everywhere so if you get a deleted 6.7 insist on the deleted parts.

I'm also trying to find the difference between the 2005 and 2006 Ram Diesels. Some things say the are nearly the same, some say different. I see the piston shape and injector is different. Is one design better than the other?? I like that the 2006 interiors are a little nicer, but I'll sacrifice that is there is a big difference in engine reliability.

No differences in the motor internals between an 05 and 06

I guess I will post this again, from page 2 of this thread

2003/2004: Holset HE341 Turbo; 54/58/9

2004.5-2007: Holset HE351 Turbo; 60/60/9
The electronic wastegates on these were also problematic

04.5-07 HE351:
7 blade 60mm/60/9
19mm wastegate hole non divided

2003-2004 trucks have an 8 hole nozzles

2004.5+ trucks have a 5 hole nozzle

555 motors (2003 and early 2004): 5.9 and 6.7 injector nozzles have a wide spray angle due to a reentrant bowl design.

600/610 motors (2004.5+) 5.9 injector nozzles have a narrow spray angle due to the open non-reentrant bowl design.

555 motor: 143* injector spray impacts annular region of 113* piston bowl, concentrating combustion towards the piston dome. 8 hole nozzles with two injection events

600/610-series: 124* injector spray impacts central region of 140* piston dome, propagating combustion towards the cylinder wall. 5 hole nozzles with three injection events

The 2004.5 trucks have a odd piston bowl design, 5 hole nozzles with a less efficient spray pattern..............all this, when coupled with the 3 injection events makes the motors MUCH MORE prone to piston melt downs and higher EGTs

In 2007.5, Cummins went back to the old 2003/20-04 piston bowl design for the 6.7L CTD motors

Gotcha, sorry, I read through that, I just thought I was missing something after reading through a thread on Cummins Forum

A little late to the party but, how about that new Nissan Titan with the Cummins, seems the new Titan and tundras are kicking butt.

I haven’t really looked at them, but I will! Are there any build threads of the Titans on here?
